On Wednesday, May 13, Los Angeles Mission College celebrated the opening of its new Student-Parent Hub with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by campus and District leadership, community partners, student-parents, and faculty & staff.

The Student-Parent Hub was created to support parenting students by providing a welcoming space where they can study, access resources, and spend time with their children while on campus. The space connects student-parents with support services and information designed to help them balance their academic and family responsibilities.

The event also celebrated the launch of NEST (Navigating Education and Support for Thriving Families), a new $1.4 million initiative supported by the ECMC Foundation. Through partnerships with five colleges, including four within the Los Angeles Community College District, NEST will help expand access to childcare resources, benefits navigation, and other support services for student-parents.

The Student-Parent Hub and NEST initiative supports the college and District’s ongoing efforts to expand resources and support services for parenting students.

Meet LACCD Student of the Week Jazelle Solis

For Jazelle Solis, studying sociology at Los Angeles Mission College has been about more than earning a degree—it has helped her become more confident and connect with others.

A 19-year-old student from Pacoima, Jazelle graduated from Vaughn International Studies Academy in 2024 and is close to completing her associate degree for transfer in sociology. She chose the major because of her interest in understanding people’s experiences and perspectives.

“I really enjoy working with people and learning about their backgrounds,” Jazelle says. “I want to get a deeper understanding of society and what it looks like from different perspectives.”

Jazelle plans to transfer to a four-year university to continue studying sociology and eventually hopes to earn a master’s degree and work as a social worker or therapist.

At Mission College, she has found support through TRIO, CCRH, and Puente, where she connected with counselor Rosa Moreno and other mentors.

“My top three people are my mom, Joanna Meza from Outreach, Dean Vanessa Hernandez, and Rosa Moreno,” Jazelle says. “They’ve always been there for me and helped guide me through my journey.”

Jazelle also works on campus in the TRIO program, supporting other students while pursuing her own academic goals.

“In high school I was really antisocial,” Jazelle says. “Being a sociology major helped me become more social and get to know people.”

She says learning to ask questions and seek help has been an important part of her college experience.

Outside of school, Jazelle enjoys baking and experimenting with new recipes.
For students considering sociology, she encourages them to focus on building relationships and connecting with others. “Networking and getting to know people brings a lot of opportunities,” she says. “It really opens your horizon.”
