For more than 30 years, USC Lambda has been building community, creating opportunities and supporting generations of LGBTQ+ Trojans.

Through scholarships, mentorship and meaningful connections, USC Lambda helps students feel supported at USC while giving them the resources and relationships to build their futures. This year’s Scholarship Benefit continued that tradition, raising more than $43,000 to support LGBTQ+ students.

The celebration brought together students, alumni and supporters who share a commitment to creating a welcoming community and opening doors for the next generation of Trojans.

Take a walk down Trousdale, and you’ll find the most iconic landmarks. ✌️

First up, the CPA Globe at the Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow Center for International and Public Affairs building 🌐

The DMC houses the USC College’s School of International Relations, the Department of Anthropology, the Department of Art History, the Department of Political Science, as well as the LIPA Library for Applied Social Sciences. It is named after USC alum, historian, and war chief of the Apsáalooke (Crow) Nation, Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow.

Right in front of Doheny Library, you will find the Youth Triumphant fountain ⛲️

Famously featured in the 1967 film, “The Graduate,” this fountain is a replica with four kneeling woman figures at the base, each representing a democratic cornerstone: school, home, community, and church. Atop the four kneeling female figures is a bronze figure representing youth. Presented to USC in 1935 by the Carman-Ryles family in memory of their son, Edward L. Prentiss.

At Hahn Plaza, you can find our two mascots: Tommy Trojan and Traveler. 🐴

The Tommy Trojan statue was erected in 1930 in honor of the semicentennial anniversary of the university. The words “faithful, scholarly, skillful, courageous and ambitious” carved into the base represent the ideal qualities of a Trojan. However, true Trojans know that our official mascot is actually Traveler. First appearing at a 1961 home football game, Traveler finally joined Tommy at Hahn Plaza in 2010.

Last but not least, our original mascot, George Tirebiter, has a statue of his own! 🛞

In the 1940s, when Trousdale was a street filled with cars, George would chase them down to bite their tires. Trojans became so endeared with him that he became USC’s first official mascot in 1947. Although Traveler has taken on the mantle of USC’s mascot, this statue continues George’s legacy. On game days, pet this little guy’s head for good luck during our match.

After eight neurosurgeons said her brain tumor couldn’t be removed, Karen Ross turned to USC for another opinion.

The Las Vegas attorney’s search led her to Gabriel Zada, MD, a Keck Medicine of USC neurosurgeon and co-director of the USC Brain Tumor Center. Despite the meningioma’s complex location, Zada and his team were able to successfully remove the tumor.

Following months of recovery and occupational therapy, Ross returned to her law practice and began supporting others facing brain tumor surgery.

Five years later, she remains tumor-free and has a new perspective on life.

Read more about Ross’ journey and the USC team behind her care:

After hearing that surgical removal of her benign meningioma was impossible, Karen Ross took her case to the USC Brain Tumor Center.
