Think you know mime? Think again. 🎭

The LA Mime Festival returns to LACC Theatre Academy for our third annual partnership, bringing four days of workshops, performances, and physical storytelling to the heart of Hollywood.

Mime is more than white face paint, striped shirts, invisible boxes, and performers who never speak. It’s movement. Gesture. Character. Clowning. Mask. Rhythm. Storytelling. And sometimes, it isn’t silent at all.

This year’s festival explores just how broad the world of mime can be, with workshops in corporeal mime, mask, clown, movement, physical character work, and more, alongside live performances, variety shows, artist showcases, a live Mime Radio Show recording, and a free panel talkback.

Whether you’re a performer, a student, or just curious about an art form you think you know, come experience mime from a completely different perspective.

Stop thinking of mime as silence. Start thinking of it as another language.

Curiosity and Character:

Tim Curry built an extraordinary career across theatre, film, television, music, and voice acting. With curiosity, commitment, and a fearless willingness to embrace the unexpected, he created characters that were strange, funny, frightening, theatrical, and entirely unforgettable.

His work reminds us that some of the most interesting creative discoveries happen when artists move beyond the familiar. Rather than avoiding unusual or complicated characters, he explored them with intelligence, humor, and complete commitment.

For our next Words for the Work, we remember Tim Curry on Curiosity and Character and, in Tim’s own words:

“I like playing the more curious corners of the human mind and human behavior, partly because they’re a tad more interesting.”

This year, we have lost many remarkable artists whose work has shaped theatre, film, television, and music.

Dolly Parton’s life and career inspired us to begin something new. From humble beginnings, she built an extraordinary career through talent, discipline, hard work, and a clear sense of who she was. She also used her success to support education, literacy, and opportunities for others.

That combination of craft, perseverance, and generosity is the starting point for Words for the Work, a new LACC Theatre Academy series created to pass along words from artists, past and present, that can encourage, challenge, and sustain us in our own creative work.

We begin with Dolly’s own words:

The Hospital of Emotions Immersive Exhibition opened May 27 and runs through July 31. Don't miss your chance to experience Room 62 and the many other immersive works throughout this remarkable exhibition.

Introducing the Compassion Department, Room 62.

For Hospital of Emotions, Scene Shift (.shift) created a collaborative intervention that expands the traditional approach to environmental design. Their installation serves as a blueprint for a more compassionate world, demonstrating how shared creative environments can foster connection and community.

Scene Shift is an evolving design collective founded by award-winning performance designers Maureen Weiss and Sibyl Wickersheimer. What began as Scene Shift: U.S. Set Designers in Conversation, featuring discussions with more than 30 leading designers, has grown into a collective, exhibition platform, and podcast dedicated to expanding theatrical design into interdisciplinary collaboration.

Their Compassion Crew includes artists, lighting designers, costume designers, and prop and puppet makers, and we are thrilled to celebrate the talents of Hannah Burnham, Jack Pullman, Claire Fraser Walsh, Rowan Auckland, and Lou Hartmann.

LACC Theatre Academy is especially proud that Maureen Weiss, Jack Pullman, and Claire Fraser Walsh are members of our faculty community, while Rowan Auckland and Lou Hartmann are current students helping bring this immersive world to life.

As we close out finals week and celebrate the end of another remarkable semester, the LACC Theatre Academy would like to congratulate our students on their hard work, creativity, resilience, and dedication.

Throughout the year, our students brought stories to life through performance, design, production, and collaboration. Every rehearsal, class, and production has helped build a creative community that challenges, inspires, and supports one another. We are incredibly proud of everything our students have accomplished this semester.

As we move into Pride Month, we recognize the many LGBTQIA+ artists, educators, designers, technicians, and storytellers who have helped shape the theatre community. Theatre has long been a place where people come together to share stories, build connections, and discover new perspectives. We are proud to celebrate the members of our community who continue that tradition through their creativity, talent, and passion.

We are also excited to continue that work this summer as the LACC Theatre Academy joins the upcoming Hollywood Fringe Festival as an official Education Hub. We look forward to welcoming artists, audiences, and new voices to campus as we celebrate the creativity and collaboration that make live theatre so special.

To all of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters, thank you for another incredible semester. We wish you a restful summer, a joyful Pride Month, and the very best in the adventures ahead.
