UCLA Bridge the Gap

The UCLA Black Alumni Association has teamed with the Baldwin Hills Buffalo Wild Wings to bring together black alumni and students to reconnect, network and raise awareness. Come watch the 2012 Bruins football season opener with your fellow Bruins – old and new –and help raise money to reverse UCLA’s black student enrollment rate. Proceeds from food and a raffle will benefit the UCLA SHAPE community program and help fund the UBAA Legacy Scholarship Program. As a result of Proposition 209, which eliminated affirmative action in admission for all public institutions in California, the diversity of incoming freshman classes of UCLA has been changed. Students Heightening Academic Performance through Education (SHAPE) is a UCLA student-initiated outreach program. By working with the students with the greatest need in collaboration with local organizations in the Los Angeles and Inglewood communities, SHAPE is making strides to counter the effects of Prop 209 on students of color seeking higher education. Proceeds from the event will also help fund the UBAA Legacy Scholarship Program, which seeks to preserve the legacy of African-American students at UCLA by providing every incoming freshmen with at least $1,000 in scholarships. By raising $500,000 in 2012, the program will be able to provide up to 30 of the top performing African-American freshmen with $10,000 scholarships and up to $1,500 to other African-American freshmen. It’s a guaranteed good time with an amazing crowd and it’s all for a great cause.
