The future of healthcare is shaped through hands-on experience, service, and leadership.
For more than 25 years, COPE Health Scholars has provided aspiring healthcare professionals with meaningful, hands-on clinical experience in real hospital settings. By rotating through multiple clinical departments and learning alongside multidisciplinary healthcare teams, scholars gain firsthand exposure to patient-centered care while developing the professionalism, communication, adaptability, teamwork, and confidence essential for today’s healthcare workforce.
For scholars looking to expand their experience beyond the clinical setting, many program sites offer the opportunity to apply for leadership positions. Through a competitive interview and selection process, and based on site needs and position availability, scholars may serve in leadership roles while continuing their regular clinical shifts. These experiences provide opportunities to mentor fellow scholars, support program operations, collaborate with healthcare and program leaders, and strengthen leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Today, COPE Health Scholars alumni contribute across the healthcare industry as physicians, surgeons, nurses, physician assistants, therapists, healthcare administrators, executives, researchers, and countless other professionals dedicated to improving the health of their patients and communities.

What does it take to develop the next generation of healthcare leaders?
At COPE Health Scholars, we believe it takes more than a classroom. It takes perspective.
The Japan International Intensive is a 12-day immersion inside one of the world’s most respected healthcare systems. Participants gain direct access to hospital executives, physicians, and faculty, and study — side by side — how two nations approach the questions that define modern healthcare: cost, access, and quality of care.
Through lectures, a faculty panel, and time inside the hospitals themselves, participants develop what today’s healthcare organizations value most: systems thinking. The ability to understand how the parts of a health system connect — and to lead across them.
This is a serious professional development experience, designed for those preparing for careers in medicine, health administration, and graduate study. The result is a broader perspective, a stronger foundation for leadership, and a professional network that spans the United States and Japan.

Over the past 12 days, you embraced every opportunity to learn, ask questions, challenge perspectives, and grow.
Through expert-led education, clinical-site visits, comparative healthcare discussions, case studies, professional collaboration, and cultural immersion, you experienced healthcare beyond the classroom while building friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
Your curiosity, professionalism, and dedication made this experience truly special, and it has been a privilege to watch each of you grow throughout this journey.
While the intensive has come to a close, the impact of this experience is only beginning. We look forward to seeing the difference each of you will make as future healthcare professionals.
