Brown University Latino Alumni Council 03/29/2021

Hoping all BULAC-LA members have stayed safe and healthy during this pandemic that has caused unprecedented disruption to our normal lives. I know it’s been quiet on the BULAC-LA front, but hoping in person gatherings can occur soon! In the meantime here is an opportunity to engage virtually/via phone!

BULAC is looking for folks to influence the number of admitted Latinx students that attend Brown. All you need to do is personally welcome Latinx students to Brown, talk to them about the Latinx experience at Brown and help answer any of their, or their family’s, questions. If you’re interested in volunteering please read more here: http://bulac.org/blog/2021/03/26/newsletter-call-for-volunteers-spring-updates/?fbclid=IwAR3tx1zoL8wcvEpyr25VfK-a59YHA0V91dKpkL6cjnm7lyjX1gldia3Npws

Brown University Latino Alumni Council BULAC is proud to launch its Annual Spring Matriculation Campaign to influence the number of admitted Latinx students that attend Brown and we are seeking your help to make this a reality.

In case y’all didn’t see this!

As a Brown alum, you can visit the library (without the stress of studying!) and check out books you find while perusing the shelves. And did you know that you also have free access to hundreds of online journals, books, newspapers, and more from anywhere in the world? http://bit.ly/2lszJPw

BULAC-LA is excited to announce its new co-chairs: Edith Moreno, '07 and Rocío Hernández, '08! Please read below to learn about our amazing new co-chairs and be sure to stay in-touch regarding upcoming events via our page and by email. A very warm welcome to Edith and Rocío!

Edith Moreno:
Edith was born and raised in southeast Los Angeles and is the proud daughter of two Mexican immigrants. She graduated from Brown in 2007 with a BA in Geological Sciences and Hispanic Literature & Culture. After Brown, she obtained a MA in Environmental Science & Management from the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). She then moved to San Diego and worked in the environmental consulting field for almost 5 years before joining San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E). At SDG&E she worked on environmental permitting and compliance matters. She moved back to Los Angeles in 2018 to work for the Southern California Gas Company where she is now a Senior Environmental Policy Advisor working on a variety of energy issues and environmental regulatory proceedings. In her free time Edith enjoys hiking, camping, beach volleyball, and beer tasting!

Rocío Hernández:
Rocío Hernández was born and raised in Boyle Heights and graduated from Brown in 2008 with a BA in Urban Studies and Ethnic Studies. She proudly serves her community as the District Director for Los Angeles City Council District 14 which encompasses the communities of Boyle Heights, El Sereno, Northeast Los Angeles, and Downtown Los Angeles. She works in a predominantly Latino and immigrant community, managing public projects, leading office initiatives, organizing public events, and strongly advocating so that her community gets its fair share of city resources. On a personal level, she is a big Dodger fan and enjoys going to Dodger games and staying physically active.
