A Kid Explains History

I’m still processing being accepted into Columbia University. I have no idea how the college acceptance committees do what they do. How they sift through thousands of applications and stories. Why some amazing kids get passed over and others chosen. This past month I got accepted to several great schools but was also rejected and waitlisted by just as many. I know the gift that was given to me and I am so grateful that my dream school saw something in my application and took a chance.

I’m a student with a public school education so I would be remiss not to thank (and especially and Principal Horne) for all their care, guidance and support! I see you too & .armstrong.ms_ptsa

And, of course, a huge thank you to the community we’ve built with AKEH. Whether you knew it or not, you were with me through this whole process. Mentioned in every application and written about in lord knows how many essays. I owe so much to you. I’m very excited for my next chapter at - where I will keep trying to “save the future by learning history”.

Congrats to Quinn on qualifying for the CA State Speech and Debate Championships! Taking 1st in International Extemporaneous Speaking (and he picket fenced, what?!) and 3rd in National Extemporaneous 🙌🏽 He’s excited to compete for and the Tri-County Forensics League at - And because I’m his mom and he’s a senior 😭 I’m just gonna brag on him for a hot second… he really threw himself into speech from the start of Freshman year. He made it to state all four years and has grown so much as a public speaker, aware citizen (he has to watch a lot of news to compete in extemp 😂) and all-around person. He was lucky to find an activity he was passionate about in a school that offered the opportunity. But a huge part of the equation was finding a coach who supports him through thick and thin, allows all the kids to be exactly who they are without expectation and still manages to pull the very best out of them. Thank you for everything!

But while most agreed to see the Confederate leadership swing, the disagreements on what the future of the south shall become are far more fierce. President Grant has a lot of laws to pass, including the 15th Amendment, and limited time to work with.

Let me know what you think of the 15th Amendment’s wording? Would this amendment have solved many problems we faced in our true past?

This kid was born in 1929. He became world famous in the 1960’s, but he wasn’t an actor or a singer. He got married in 1953 and had four children, but he never lived to see them grow up. As a leader of the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King Jr organized non-violent protests and gave some of the best known speeches in American history. His work helped make racial discrimination illegal in 1964, almost one hundred years after the end of the Civil War. We are grateful for all that he gave to our country and celebrate him today on Martin Luther King Jr Day!
