We offer the best varieties of OP vegetable, culinary and medicinal herb seedlings, as well as perennial food plants. Los Angeles, CA.

Spade and Seeds is a Los Angeles based urban farm that raises seedlings in accordance with the Biodynamic lunar calendar. The varieties we choose to grow are historical, heirloom, or open pollinated and the methods we use to grow them are organic and biodynamic, (although we are not Demeter certified).

MMMMM YEAH WINTER VEG! πŸ₯¦πŸ₯¦
I say yes to all the leafy greens, all the potatoes and peas, all the edible flowers, all the lettuces, all the puppy noses, all the viola’s, all the calm, and the serene, the cool days (more please) and the cold nights. I definitely say yes to all the endless emeralds greens and shades of blue foliage, to endless beauty for days. And all the technicolor Swiss chards that I can never get enough of!

I also say yes yes yes to just planting even two kales and one Swiss chard, and maybe one Italian parsley and a Viola for a pop of edible color to get you through the winter even if you just have a small patio or pot to plant a few things in. Life changing!

Here’s a few snippets from my winter gardens around Los Angeles. Winter veg gardens, so so good!

THIGH HIGH LEMON BALM πŸ‹πŸ‹

This gigantor lemon balm has me super duper swooning! A few months ago, in my grubbies and sunscreened face, I visited the good folks over at the Occidental College edible urban farm (.feast.garden) in Eagle Rock for a meet n greet. Such a blast! We talked veggies, compost, mushrooms, chickens, CA natives, soil prep...and I got to meet my one of my fave plant allies all grown up in a behemoth 4 feet tall height. BAM! πŸ’₯

Later that morning rounding up some chickens, we

HOMEGROWN ZINNIAS & WHITE SAGE! 🌺🌺

For a client on the Westside, I wanted to give the garden enough cutting flowers to have a little bit of fun, you know? 😌 The house kiddos loooove flowers and fresh bouquets, so in went the Zinnias in different hot tones, some bronze sunflowers from a school project, nearby French lavender and some homegrown white sage, (Salvia apiana) for reverence, fragrance and that gorgeous silver.

I cherish that something so sweetly pretty can also be a lesson for new generations in how White Sage is over-foraged from our nearby mountains, and how growing our own is so important...How we can approach or at least start to beckon sustainability and respect and one day soon embody those lessons. 🌱

EARTH DAY, EVERYDAY 🌎🌍

How magical is it that we get so much yummy goodness, blessings, plant medicine, life, prana, mana, abundance and incomprehensible beauty from our earth? May we celebrate her today, always and forever, and take aligned and inspired actions in all of our everyday activities to protect her for generations to come. πŸ™πŸ½βœŒπŸ½

WHEN LIFE GETS BUSY BUSY, MAKE PESTO x SPRING 2022 INSTALL 🌱🌱

I love this client and their freshly installed garden for so many reasons. I am excited to see it grow in and voluptuously take over!

πŸͺ΄FirstπŸͺ΄ These Modern Moroccan vibes are sooooo relaxing and gives such a retreat feel to this sweet edible garden. The collaboration between my client and her designer created a space that is chill and inviting with architectural details that made this space pop and come to life. βœ…

πŸͺ΄SecondπŸͺ΄ This photo is such a testament to what early planning with edible garden design garden consultations can do. (We started with a garden consult in Fall 2019) Good design from the start sets you on a path to garden success early on. It helps get to the yummy stuff earlier! We all want that, don’t we?! βœ…

Then, my beautiful client continued with our garden coaching almost every month, learning all the ins and outs of what it takes to tend to an edible garden. Watching her grow and reconnect with her gardener’s soul and intuition has been incredibly joyous.

πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ When life got busy, she was able to just walk outside and harvest fresh Italian basil from her garden and make her signature pesto.
πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ When the chamomile bloomed, she made her own soothing body oil.
πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, flowers, and myriad herbs all got harvested and devoured along the way.

We planted from seeds, and she learned how to do this on her own...even starting her own tomatoes! I am a proud plant mama! πŸ˜‰ ~dabs eyes~ βœ…

It is so rewarding to watch someone connect with their garden, with plants they grew and tended. They create nourishment for themselves and others with their own hands and garden. True healing and I’m here for it! πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ™ŒπŸ½

YOU'RE NOBODY TIL SOMEBUNNY LOVES YOU! 🐰🐰

Hoppy Easter, beautiful plant people! May you celebrate this pagan festival of fertility, spring, light and delight! May you smell flowers and rebirth yourself in the most resplendent way imaginable. πŸ˜ƒ

This is Donatella Bunsace, my sweetest bunny ever, who hops around in that big meadow in the sky now. I miss her so much!

She, fuzzy goddess, who feasted on rose petals and fresh herbs from my garden, made my heart bounce with childlike joy, and created endless misadventures when she would hop off down the street to the neighbors.

πŸ•΅πŸ»β€β™€οΈ 🐰 "HI, um, have you seen a really cute little bunny hopping around? She's about 1 foot tall and has grey fur and ignores you when you call her?"

An entire garden was grown just to feed her fresh herbs and veggies, and her fluffy little face is so missed! πŸ’”
