Dr. Charles R. Drew (June 3, 1904 - April 1, 1950), a brilliant African-American physician, dreamed of establishing a school where Black physicians and future health professionals could learn, train, and lead.
Today and every day, CDU honors the medical visionary and trailblazer whose name we proudly carry.

53 years ago this week, CDU's MEDEX/Physician Assistant Program, the first of its kind in CA, graduated its inaugural class of 21 students.
Created in response to a nationwide shortage of primary care physicians, the PA profession developed when former Navy Hospital Corpsmen were trained in an accelerated medical curriculum modeled after World War II-era training.
