How was your overall experience working under MSP?
It was a wonderful experience being part of MSP. I loved being part of a program making a difference in many students’ academic journey in STEM by providing guidance as they navigated through lower-division courses. My colleague was very supportive and made a great work environment.
Any skills that you develop and are able to transfer to your current endeavors?
Through MSP I was able to enhance the skills of communicating and explaining ideas in more detail as well as finding new ways to look at problems and resolving them. These skills of communication and problem solving are handy in my current pursuit in the GIS industry.
Why did you want to work with MSP in progressing underrepresented students in STEM?
In my experience the transition from high school math curriculum to multivariable calculus as my first math class on campus was definitely rough. For one the lack of students with similar backgrounds as me in these classes and also being a first-generation student really made adjusting to the new setting hard. I felt there was no space where I felt comfortable going for help in these classes. There was no space where I could find students who could relate to what I was experiencing which definitely made me question switching out of a math major. So when I found out about MSP, I really identified with their mission and purpose of helping out students through 1-1 sessions as well as providing guidance in navigating through a STEM major. I wanted to be part of a space that could provide the tools for students to be encouraged and prepared for their academic journey in STEM.

How was your Overall experience with MSP?
Definitely, a meaningful and profound role that I’ve had the pleasure of taking. The flexibility in setting hours is immaculate, and it was really profound to help break down the barriers between students of under-resourced backgrounds and STEM. Honestly wish more people like us existed across campus, for sure.
What were the tangible transferable skills you were able to take with you post graduation?
Communication. The ability to get my coworkers up to speed and break down technical findings in my work in terms that create impact and that people remember.
Mentorship. Definitely, a challenge that comes up in work is that great people come up with technical solutions and products for their company, but they take the next step and move on somewhere else. The reality of it is that sometimes, the departure of good players in a professional environment can lead to tough times ahead. This is why a tight sense of mentorship and the commitment to pass down knowledge is incredibly important, especially if you feel like it’s the time to move on. MSP has definitely honed this knowledge and character within me, and via mentorship, I’m striving to ensure that my successors can continue the momentum I’ve given any of my professional roles.
Why did you want to work with MSP in progressing underrepresented students in STEM?
Being a math major, being involved in community outreach, realizing that MSP was the only student-led space for fellow students to advance and explore their ambitions in STEM - it felt like too good of an opportunity to pass up looking back at it. Absolutely zero regrets in taking part in this mission.

Are you good at math? Are you passionate about community building? Do you want to be involved?
Come level the academic playing field with the Math Success Program!
Math Success Program (MSP) is a free math counseling service aimed at helping UCLA undergraduate students succeed in their math courses. Now, more than ever, students need as many resources as possible to achieve academic success during the remote instruction period.
Currently, we are looking to hire new student counselors to join the MSP staff. MSP Math Counselors are more than tutors, they are expected to be knowledgeable of departmental requirements for STEM degrees and assist students in passing their math classes.
