2025’s homicide tally marks the city’s lowest total since 1966, when the city’s population was nearly a third smaller. The downturn mirrors precipitous drops in many other large cities nationwide in 2025.

LAPD chief says more homicides are being solved amid a record decline in killings Police officials held a news conference Thursday to tout improvements in the homicide 'clearance rate,' a measure of how often detectives mark murder investigations as closed, saying more killings were solved in a year when crime rates plummeted.

In 2009, Congress designated March as National Criminal Justice Month in order to promote societal awareness regarding the causes and consequences of crime, as well as strategies for preventing and responding to crime.
