2025’s homicide tally marks the city’s lowest total since 1966, when the city’s population was nearly a third smaller. The downturn mirrors precipitous drops in many other large cities nationwide in 2025.
LAPD chief says more homicides are being solved amid a record decline in killings
Police officials held a news conference Thursday to tout improvements in the homicide 'clearance rate,' a measure of how often detectives mark murder investigations as closed, saying more killings were solved in a year when crime rates plummeted.

In 2025, Los Angeles experienced the lowest homicide rate since the 1950s. It also saw a decrease in the rate of shootings and deadly car crashes.
