The Actor's Mill is dedicated to the principles of Meisner and The Practical Aesthetics. Action and Moment.

Sandy Meisner believed, “Acting is living truthfully in imaginary circumstances.” This can be broken down into two areas. Really listening, working moment to moment off of the other actors, while trying to accomplish a specific goal. The Meisner Technique demystifies the craft of acting and provides a solid foundation to any actor, whether they are beginners or experienced veterans. It also provides directors with a clear and concise way of communicating what they want from their actors. Dan has taught acting and coached actors for over 12 years. Some of the actors he has worked with have gone on to book work on such TV, Film and Broadway shows as American Horror Story, HBO’s Westworld, Longmire, Last Man Standing, True Grit, The Lone Ranger, Wicked and Hairspray.

AN ODE TO THE ACTOR

Actors are some of the most driven, courageous people on the face of the earth. They deal with more day to day rejection in one year than most people do in a lifetime. Every day actors face the financial challenge of living a freelance lifestyle, the disrespect of people who think they should get real jobs, and their own fear that they will never work again. Every day they have to ignore the possibility that the vision to which they have dedicated their lives is a pipe dream. With every passing year, many of them watch as other people their age achieve the predictable mile stones of a normal life: the car, the family, the house, and the nest egg. But they stay true to their dream, in spite of sacrifices. Why? Because actors are willing to give their entire lives to a moment: to that line, the laugh, the gesture, or that interpretation that will stir the audience’s soul. Actors are beings who have tasted life’s nectar in the crystal moment when they poured out their creative spirit and touched another heart. In that instant, they were as close to magic, God, and perfection as anyone could ever be. And in their own hearts, they know that to dedicate oneself to that moment is worth a thousand lifetimes.
