As part of RISE Week, our Canoga Park students from Alliance for Community Empowerment had the opportunity to visit the University of Southern California (USC) on Monday, August 31st, for a day of college exploration, student engagement, and hands-on learning. Social Studies teacher Michael Jackson shared the following write-up with us about the trip:
During the visit, students participated in an interactive USC Campus Scavenger Hunt, working in teams to explore the university, locate important campus landmarks and resources, and experience the energy of college life. The activity encouraged teamwork, communication, problem-solving, independence, and active engagement throughout the campus. Rather than experiencing USC only through a traditional campus tour, students were able to navigate the campus themselves, collaborate with their peers, and become more comfortable within a university environment.
One of the highlights of the experience was the opportunity to meet and engage with current USC students. YCSC students were able to ask questions, hear firsthand perspectives about college life, and learn more about academics, campus involvement, and the overall university experience. These interactions helped make college feel more personal and relatable while encouraging students to envision themselves continuing their education after earning their high school diploma.
College exposure experiences such as the USC field trip are an important part of helping students connect their current high school experience with their future goals. By giving students opportunities to see, explore, ask questions, and experience different college environments firsthand, YCSC continues to encourage students to think beyond earning their high school diploma and toward the many possibilities available for their future.
