“It’s concentration…It’s relaxation…It’s playing…being able to play…Kids do it all the time…It’s being able to immerse yourself into something else…and to ignore all of ‘that’…and to take yourself into a different skin.” ~

Dear actors,
Remember this:

“Human beings rarely understand themselves through conscious psychological awareness. They develop beliefs and points of view about themselves, other people, and how life works based on what they have lived through. As an actor, you have to enter into a much deeper private investigation and conversation with yourself to discover what will give you genuine access to the character and allow you to live the heartbeat of that human being on stage or on screen. You cannot bring the character down to you so that they fit comfortably inside your own civilian, everyday life. You have to go to the character’s world and then find that human being within yourself. You have to get underneath the history, the psychology, and the behavior until that entire circumstantial life becomes rooted in you and plugged into your nervous system deeply enough that you respond to it impulsively rather than intellectually.” ~ .A.Campanaro

Dear actors,
Remember this:

“There is a difference between wanting to be an actor and actually enjoying the work it takes to be one. If an actor is passionate about acting and truly serious about becoming a professional actor, that will reveal itself in the way they approach their training. Innate talent cannot be taught, but it can be cultivated, nurtured, and given the conditions in which it can grow. Craft can be taught to develop that innate talent to its fullest potential and allow the actor to access it with greater depth, freedom, and consistency, particularly when inspiration alone is not enough to do the job. A teacher can provide the tools, guidance, challenges, and environment for growth, but desire, appetite, enjoyment, and love for the work cannot be implanted or manufactured. The actor has to want it. Really want it. Because if you are fortunate enough to get the job, you will never not have to come prepared and do the work it requires. Talent may open the door. Craft prepares you to walk through it. But the desire to walk through it has to be yours.” ~ .A.Campanaro

Dear actors,
Remember this:

“The actor’s life is not an easy road to travel. You may have to walk through many peaks and valleys, surf many tumultuous waters, and inevitably weather many unexpected storms. But when your love for the dream outweighs the obstacles that come with it, you’ll know you’re on the right path.” ~ .A.Campanaro

Dear actors,
Remember this:

“Every character was once a child. Every child has a history. Being an ‘adult’ doesn’t mean reaching some developmental finish line where you no longer become frightened, overwhelmed, confused, lonely, or even desperate for somebody to tell you that they love you or that things are simply going to be okay. Adults are children who have accumulated years, responsibilities, knowledge, defenses, skills, losses, and experience. Those earlier parts of us don’t disappear. They help formulate our perceptions, our behavior, and our responses to the world around us. We don’t ever really ‘grow up.’ We grow in. Life accumulates within us, and what has accumulated within inevitably emanates outward through the way we perceive, behave, respond, protect ourselves, pursue what we need, and relate to others. This pertains to every character and every life.” ~ .A.Campanaro

Dear actors,
Remember this:

“An audience does not come to watch actors ‘demonstrate’ life or emotion. They come to witness human beings navigating life under given circumstances: pursuing, avoiding, surviving, and adapting. They come to experience a heightened version of the human experience. Human beings are complex, contradictory, and often carry things that remain unseen. Every person has secrets. Some are small, some life altering, some painful, some hopeful, some shameful, and some deeply private. Whether large or small, these inner truths influence everything: how we think, how we behave, what we avoid, what we pursue, and how we protect ourselves. Any serious actor does not rely on shortcuts, tricks, emotional demonstrations, finding ways to appear ‘interesting,’ or ‘performing’ life. A serious actor is passionate about the study of human behavior and about becoming a real human being in action under the circumstances of the text, so deeply connected to those circumstances that truthful, motivated, and justified behavior emerges in the moment.” ~ .A.Campanaro

Scene Study Class Work:

Scene: ALMOST, MAINE
by John Cariani

Randy: Ricky Valdez [LA]

“One of the biggest misconceptions about acting is the idea that preparation somehow limits your ability to be truthful, instinctive, and impulsive in the unknown of the moment. Some people say, ‘Just wing it and whatever happens happens’, but that’s utter nonsense—irresponsible, unprofessional, and often just an excuse to be lazy. The truth is, preparation—your craft—if understood and applied properly, tangibly and humanistically, allows you to do exactly what people think ‘winging it’ will achieve, but with true artistic skill, within the givens of the text, and the ability to live truthfully, instinctively, and impulsively in the unknown of the moment without hoping, wishing, or depending on luck. This preparation also grants you the consistency and continuity to perform eight shows a week or deliver sixteen takes in a row. If your technique stifles your ability to do that, then I’d argue it wasn’t taught or exercised as properly as intended. Craft, when properly cultivated, liberates the actor—it doesn’t restrict them. The craft you develop mirrors what exists in life and must therefore exist within the life of your character, under their unique circumstances. That life unfolds through the character’s spine, shaped by their lens of perception and their filtered listening based on their wants and needs. Let’s be clear: how you respond to everyday circumstances is not necessarily how your character would respond to theirs. It’s not about replicating your own experiences; it’s about inhabiting a different set of circumstances and reacting in a way that is true to the character’s reality. So do your work, know your lines, show up on time. Period.”~ Mario A. Campanaro
