For Session 3 of the Youth Leadership Airport Academy, our cohort shifted its focus to the future of eco-friendly aviation during an immersive visit to Clay Lacy Aviation's facilities with Jacob Haik and Luis Rivas.

The future leaders engaged in an interactive Q&A panel with industry trailblazers, including Jacob Haik (Van Nuys Airport Manager, LAWA) and Luis Rivas (Safety and Sustainability Specialist, Clay Lacy Aviation). Students learned firsthand how professionals are pioneering sustainable practices, introducing eco-friendly innovations into general aviation, and becoming leaders in aviation.

A community school that lasts isn't luck; it's built on four pillars. 🏫

Most schools have one or two. The ones that sustain the work have all four:
1️⃣ Integrated student supports — Holistic supports to address individual student needs
2️⃣ Extended learning time — Academic support, enrichment, real-world learning opportunities
3️⃣ Family & community engagement — families as partners, not an audience
4️⃣ Collaborative leadership — shared power, so the work outlives any one champion

Where to start: before you add another program, do a simple assets-and-gaps scan across all four. Name what's already strong, where the thin spots are, and which pillar; if it slipped, it would take the rest with it. That one is your priority.

This is the work we do with schools and districts: turning a set of programs into a system that holds together and keeps its funding. 40+ community-school sites and counting.

Your program is working. Here's how to show funders it is. 📊

When we help a partner get funded, we start with three Results-Based Accountability questions:
→ How much did we do?
→ How well did we do it?
→ Is anyone better off?

We worked alongside the Alliance College-Ready Public Schools team to document the need with real data, define measurable outcomes, and translate the everyday work of their community schools into the language funders trust.

The result: 23 schools awarded the California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP) Implementation grant.

That's the difference between a simple application and telling a story that engages funders at a different level. Our approach has helped our network of partners secure $47.6M of CCSPP Implementation funding.

For the final session of the Youth Leadership Airport Academy, students turned their passion for flight into a plan for the future.

After exploring operations, mechanics, and sustainability, this week focused on postsecondary aviation pathways — trade schools, community college, and four-year universities. Students met an expert college-and-career panel, created LinkedIn profiles, and took professional headshots to carry it all forward.

Last week, we had the opportunity to join our partners at Alliance College-Ready Public Schools as they presented “From Policy to Practice: Embedding No Place for Hate into Community Schools for Belonging & Safety” at the National Community Schools and Family Engagement Conference.

The session highlighted Alliance’s journey to integrate the No Place for Hate framework into its broader Community Schools strategy, not as a stand-alone initiative but as part of a larger commitment to fostering belonging, student wellness, safety, and meaningful engagement across its school communities. What stood out most was the honest conversation around implementation: the lessons learned, the challenges navigated, and the importance of centering student voice, restorative practices, and strong partnerships in the work.

We are grateful to have supported this effort and proud to see Alliance share its experience with practitioners from across the country. Opportunities like these remind us that lasting change happens when schools move beyond programs and focus on building systems that create the conditions for every student to thrive.

Summer is almost here, but we’re still celebrating the launch of our second annual Youth Leadership Airport Academy! ☀️✈️

Session 1 kicked off by introducing high school students to the behind-the-scenes of airport operations. They explored everything from daily logistics to leadership strategies, learning exactly what makes Van Nuys Airport a premier global hub. Councilmember Imelda Padilla and LAWA Commissioner Victor Narro welcomed students by speaking on the vital role Van Nuys Airport plays in the community. Students focused on what it means to be a leader, as well as how they can take their skills and apply them to the vast field of aviation. Thank you to the Youth Development Department, Councilmember Imelda Padilla, Commissioner Narro, and Van Nuys Airport for continuing to inspire and uplift future leaders.
