We join together as a campus Jewish community tomorrow night to celebrate the possibility of this moment while never forgetting what came before it two years ago. We will bear witness, we will tell their stories, and we will charge ahead into a more hopeful future. Am Yisrael Chai! 🇮🇱

Two full years. Down to the Hebrew date. They are finally home. All of the living.

Taken hostage on Simchat Torah in Israel in 5784, 20 brave and resilient souls rejoin their families on the eve of Simchat Torah in 5786.

We have held our breath through two years of tumult, pain, and loss awaiting this date. Two full cycles of Torah.

Tomorrow, as we celebrate Simchat Torah at our Hillel, we will first read from the single parasha reserved for Simchat Torah, the only portion with the word “blessing” in its name (v’zot habracha), and we will exhale with words of blessing. ברוך מתיר אסורים- blessed is the One who frees the captive. As we then read the opening word of Torah, בראשית, in the beginning, we will celebrate the possibility in this moment.

Join us at 6pm tomorrow to celebrate, to claim our moment of joy, and to feel relief in community.

Then, as we gather as a campus this Thursday evening, we will face the future opening before us ready to dance again, finally able to contemplate a Torah we will write together as the prospect of peace arrives with this renewed cycle.

Chag Sameach and Am Yisrael Chai!

Leading into Shabbat, we are watching, hoping, and praying as we learn more about the potential hostage release deal.

We are preparing to commemorate two years since the tragedy of October 7, and we will gather in community to grieve, remember, and support each other as we bear witness to the tragic events and incomprehensible losses.

The State of Israel is officially observing this anniversary on October 16, as it reflects the Hebrew calendar date of the event, the 24th of Tishrei. In solidarity with the State of Israel, we will do the same. We are grateful to partner with Trojans for Israel, Cinegogue, and Chabad for an evening of bearing witness and grieving our collective loss together on October 16 by experiencing the film “We Will Dance Again,” which chronicles the events of the attack on the Nova Music Festival.

More on our collective commemorations this month can be found below. We continue to pray, hope, and dream about the release of our hostages.

Next stop: Jerusalem! We started our day with a ruach-filled Shehecheyanu, then explored the timeless streets of the Old City. We paused to reflect and leave our hopes and prayers at the Western Wall. From there, we made our way to the lively Machane Yehuda market for a delicious lunch. On Shabbat morning, we celebrated meaningful b’nai mitzvot with & .hillel in the Jerusalem hills, followed by a peaceful afternoon of rest and renewal. That night, we brought the energy back with dancing and celebrating at the shuk!
