Today we celebrate Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, a pioneering African-American heart surgeon, famous for performing the world’s first successful open-heart surgery. Dr. Williams is also known for founding Provident Hospital, the first in*******al hospital in the country. He was the first black surgeon to be inducted into the American College of Surgeons and an advocate for more African Americans presence in the field of medicine. Thank you for all of your incredible contributions Dr. Williams!

Hoy celebramos al Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, un cirujano cardíaco afroamericano pionero, famoso por realizar con éxito la primera cirugía a corazón abierto del mundo. Due to circumstances beyond our control, CDU has cancelled SSAII and Mobile STEMM Lab classes for the remainder of the Winter 2022 session.
Further announcements will be made regarding the Spring session. We truly regret having to cancel these classes and we hope to resume them as soon as possible.
Appropriate refunds will be made to those affected.

Despite her personal challenges facing racism and sexism, Dr. Cobb was always committed to using her own success to encourage women and minorities to enter the STEMM fields. Throughout her career, Dr. Cobb worked tirelessly to promote opportunities for young women and minorities to enter the sciences and other traditionally white male-dominated fields. She never wavered from her belief that education was the key to a life of success and independence and she was determined to share that opportunity with others. Dr. Cobb is remembered today as an accomplished American biologist, cancer researcher, professor, dean, academic administrator and advocate for women and minorities in higher education and in STEMM. Such an inspiration!



A pesar de sus desafíos personales frente al racismo y el sexismo, la Dra. Cobb siempre se comprometió a usar su propio éxito para alentar a las mujeres y las minorías a ingresar a los campos de CTIMM. A lo largo de su carrera, la Dra. Today we celebrate Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb, a biologist known for her cancer cell research. Even after becoming one of the leading cancer researchers in the nation, Dr. Cobb never forgot the challenges and discrimination she faced when pursuing her education. To help pave the way for other minorities who wanted to enter the sciences, Dr. Cobb established a privately funded program for minority students in premedical and predental studies at Connecticut College. Dr. Cobb's struggles as an African American female left her with the conviction that racism and sexism were challenges that made it tougher for those like her to succeed. But, once she succeeded, she was determined to share her success with others. Thank you so much for your contributions to science and education Dr. Cobb!

Meet Giselle!
A proud PHA Alumni! PHA gave Giselle the opportunity to intern at a non-profit organization that targeted community health. After earning her High School diploma in 2019, she was accepted into the University of California Riverside where she is currently studying Sociology.
Giselle chose to study Sociology because she has a passion for working with
others, and feels that if she develops an understanding for everyone's actions, she can be of service. Now on her third year of undergraduate studies, Giselle has maintained great academic standing, making it onto the Dean's List and even qualifying to graduate a year early. Once Giselle graduates with her degree in Sociology, her next step is to attend Graduate school to obtain her Master's degree and pursue a career in Clinical Social Work. Way to go Giselle!!

¡Una orgullosa alumna de la PHA! PHA le dio a Giselle la oportunidad de hacer una pasantía en una organización sin fines de lucro que se enfocaba en la salud comunitaria. Después de obtener su diploma de escuela secundaria en 2019, fue aceptada en la Universidad de California Riverside, donde actualmente estudia Sociología.
Giselle eligió estudiar Sociología porque le apasiona trabajar con otros, y siente que si desarrolla una comprensión de las acciones de todos, puede ser útil. Today we celebrate Dr. Herman Branson, a pioneering biophysicist who discovered the alpha helix protein structure. Although his discovery of key protein structures is what he is mainly known for, Dr. Branson was also a champion of educational equity and used his influence to increase federal aid to Black colleges in the early ’70’s! Thank you for all of your amazing contributions to science and education Dr. Branson!!!

Joy DeGruy Publications in conjunction with the Los Angeles Unified School District's Humanizing Education for Equitable Transformation (HEET) Community of Schools and the MacArthur Foundation invites you to attend a free two-day Be the Healing Symposium: A Weekend of Truth for Our Collective Wellness.
The Be the Healing Symposium will address topics of systemic racism, trauma, and healing with a cross section of community members that will include educators, social workers, students, parents, and community activists that live and work with children, youth, and adults in Los Angeles.
Dr. Joy DeGruy, will examine inter-generational and historical trauma, mental health, and improvement strategies through an educational, motivational, and solution-oriented lens.

Joy DeGruy Publications, junto con la comunidad de escuelas Humanizing Education for Equitable Transformation (HEET) del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Los Ángeles y la Fundación MacArthur, lo invitan a asistir a un simposio gratuito de dos días Be the Healing: un fin de semana de la verdad para nuestro bienestar colectivo.
