El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument is the birthplace of Los Angeles and the home of world famous Olvera Street.

El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument is the birthplace of Los Angeles and the city's oldest historic district. Founded in September 1781 near a Tongva-Native American village, El Pueblo encompasses the area where forty-four settlers from present-day Northern Mexico of Indigenous, African, and Spanish heritage journeyed more than one-thousand miles to established a new city for New Spain. S

ince that time, Los Angeles has been under the flags of Spain, Mexico and the United States and has grown into one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas. Managed by the City of Los Angeles, El Pueblo is a living museum that continues to fulfill its unique role as the historic and symbolic heart of the city, reflecting the diverse multiculturalism that contributed to its early history.

Jackie Hadnot was the third woodcarver to carve the iconic cross on Olvera Street, giving him a deeply personal connection to this piece of history. He shared that he makes a point of touching the cross before he leaves and again when he returns, a meaningful ritual that reflects how passionate he is about his experience carving it.

Jackie also shared the story behind the rose carved into the cross and the journey to have it blessed by the bishop.

Next time you’re in the area, come by Olvera Street and take a photo with the cross while learning more about the history and the people who helped bring it to life.
