CONTRA- = against / opposite
VERT = turn (convert, divert)
-IBLE = able to be

Put it together: Not able to be turned against.

Definition: Impossible to deny, dispute, or disprove; indisputable.

Synonyms: Indisputable, Irrefutable, Undeniable, Unquestionable.

Antonyms: Controversial, Debatable, Questionable, Refutable.

Example: “High-definition satellite photos provided incontrovertible proof of the island’s location.”

The Memory Hack: Think TANGERINE → TANGIBLE! If you can hold it in your hand like a real, solid tangerine, it’s tangible (unlike an abstract idea you can’t touch).

Definition: Perceptible by touch; clear, solid, and real.

Synonyms: Palpable, Concrete, Real, Solid, Definite.

Antonyms: Intangible, Abstract, Invisible.

In a sentence: Harvesting the ripe tangerine was a tangible indication that the fruit was back in season.

Ever notice how PRO- means “forward”? ➡️

Fun fact: prudent is actually an etymological “twin” (doublet) 👯‍♀️ of the word provident! Both come from the Latin providens, which literally means “seeing ahead.” 👀➡️

When you’re prudent, you don’t just react—you look ahead and make wise choices for your future.

This week, we are highlighting a prefix that gets you dozens of words for the price of one. ☝🏼

What do the words predict, prejudice, and presume have in common? Besides all being words in Vocab 4 section of the Mulholland Prep ISEE Workbook, they all start with PRE-, which means before.

Predict: To speak of something before it happens.
Prejudice: To make a judgment before knowing the facts.
Presume: To take something for granted before proving it.

Applying that exact same logic brings us to WoW #16: PRELIMINARY.

Struggling to remember what it means? Try this memory hack: think of an “OLD FACTORY.” 🏭
Imagine walking into an ancient, abandoned, rusty old factory filled with heavy, musty, smelly odors. The second you think of olfactory, visualize that super-smelly OLD FACTORY.

Definition: Of or relating to the sense of smell.

Synonyms: Scent, Nasal,

Sensory Sister Words: Visual (sight), Auditory (hearing), Tactile (touch), Gustatory (taste).

WOW Week #14: MONOTONOUS

Look closely at the root: MONO- means one or single (just like in monochrome or monopoly). Combine that with tone, and you get something that repeats the exact same single note over and over again.

Definition: Dull, tedious, and repetitious; lacking in variety and interest

Synonyms: Tedious, Boring, Dull, Repetitive, Unvarying, Mind-numbing

Antonyms: Varied, Dynamic, Exciting, Diverse, Engaging.

The more visual and creative your study methods are, the faster your brain builds permanent connections. So break up the monotonous routine this week: try drawing a scene for your next tough vocab word or teaching it to a friend. 🎨🧠
