No doubt you are all off to the start of a new school year by now. At this point, you are probably getting to know your students better and can identify those fun, quirky personalities, the strengths and challenges of each student, as well as what engages and interests them, as well as what doesn't. Knowing who we are teaching is just as important as what we are teaching. Helping students and their families navigate the demands of education today can put a lot of pressure on all involved. This is a good time to infuse some lessons, discussions, and activities that will prompt character development and/or cultivate the life skills necessary to be strong, independent, confident individuals. Don't forget to check out our book, The Organized Teacher's Guide to Building Character.

All of this can also be found in our holiday book, The Festive Teacher. Passover is one of the most widely celebrated Jewish holidays and commemorates the biblical story of Exodus, when Hebrew slaves were released from bo***ge in Egypt. Called "pesach" (pay-sak) in Hebrew, Passover is a celebration of freedom. The Seder is always observed on the first night of Passover, and in some homes on the second night as well. On both nights, the Seder concludes with a dinner.

It's that time of year again. Clocks get changed. Fall is in full effect. Warm-weathered clothes come out of the closets. And the most fun of all is Halloween. Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating. In a number of countries around the world, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats. Check out The Festive Teacher for a variety of fun and academic learning activities related to Halloween.
