Knees Forward of Toes??

Not for the patient with knee pain!❌
- Squatting with the knees forward of toes can result in a greater knee extensor
moment and quadriceps demand.
- Studies have shown that there is a 40% increase in knee joint stress when the
knees pass forward to the toes during a forward lunge.
- High levels of knee joint stress result in an increased risk for knee pain.
particularly, patellofemoral pain and patellar tendinitis.

Solution: Perform squats and lunges with a hip bias!
- Minimize stress at the knee while increasing strength of the hip extensors
- Treat the cause of the problem, don’t add to it!

SHOULD YOUR KNEES GO PAST YOUR TOES WHEN SQUATTING?
- high levels of knee joint stress result in an increased risk for knee pain, particularly patellofemoral pain
- patellofemoral pain = pain around/under the kneecap
- studies have shown that there is a 40% increase in knee joint stress when the knees pass forward to the toes in a forward lunge
- increased stress as a result of poor patellar tracking as with patellofemoral pain are due to various factors including: weak glutes, overactive hamstrings, weak quadriceps
- these strength imbalances contribute to abnormal stresses at the knee joint, further increasing knee pain
- the solution: identify the root cause of the pain and abnormal forces, design a treatment plan to address these, and follow through with patient goals!
- conclusion: when the goal is to minimize patellofemoral joint stress, perform squats and lunges up to 90 degrees of knee bend

We are so happy to have finally been able to get together to celebrate Yvonne and Adam for completing the 2021 MPI fellowship in biomechanics. They helped so many people and were a joy to have in the clinic. Their patients miss having them and so do we, but we know they are moving on to great things!

Congrats on a great year and thank you for your time with us at Movement Performance Institute!

We are so incredibly proud to congratulate Ella in passing her return to sport test! Ella began at MPI for prehab prior to her ACL repair and excelled through our MPI 9 month ACL return to sport protocol to normalize her strength , optimize her movement and limit her risk of reinjury.

Ella has put in hours in and out of the clinic to get back out on the field quick, strong, and confident. We can’t wait continue to follow your soccer career as you kick it in to high gear!

☑️Patient HIGHLIGHT☑️
..
Zoe has been one our veteran rockstars!
She came to after experiencing an ACL injury.

She worked extremely hard over 9-12 months in order to pass our rigorous testing. Since then, she has stuck around to continue her performance training in order to get herself into peak soccer shape.

She has accepted a scholarship, and will be playing soccer in New York for Hofstra University.

She has become a Movement PI favorite. While we are sad to see her go, we are very proud of her and wish her all the best in next adventure!!
