“...This is why the concept of POSTPONING JUDGEMENT is critical to being a good student in improv or any other field of study. You’re not ignoring judgment forever, you’re merely postponing it long enough to be able to make a more informed judgment. If the teacher or the lesson sucks, please stop attending, but give them the chance to prove themselves first.

This is something I experienced firsthand when I first took a yoga class. I grew up playing football, lifting weights, and giving side-eye to any mention of ‘chakras’ or ‘cleansing the spirit.’ The decorations in most yoga studios are enough to send me running for the hills and that’s before I look over and see the shirtless guy practicing headstands in tye-dyed pants. That said, I’ve been able to suspend judgment long enough to see the physical benefits of yoga, which has helped me remedy lingering back and knee pain.”

“A recent coaching experience reminded me of the difficulty of thinking creatively in a group setting and the human instinct to ‘tap the brakes’ that can stall brainstorming.

I was coaching a veteran improv ensemble that had been asked by their theater to work on a new show concept. During a brainstorming session, the most enthusiastic team member immediately started pitching some pet ideas. They were practical and fun ideas but very similar to everything the group had done before.

Another member of the group, normally positive and supportive, started shooting holes in the ideas provided by his enthusiastic teammate. He listed the reasons why the ideas would be hard to execute and why they might not result in a good show. You could feel the rest of the team retreat a bit as this team member 'tapped the brakes.' It was as if someone had dimmed the lights in the room.”
