Areté Preparatory Academy

We are growing and moving to the next level of our highly successful learning model. After 14 years as Areté, we have now formed a new school, Qualia: The School for Deeper Learning, which will be located in Calabasas, California that will serve highly passionate learners in grades 6-12.

Our coherent and effective philosophy of teaching and learning is grounded in a passion to create deeply reflective, truly original young thinkers. This follows us fully formed from nearly a decade and a half of thoughtful evolution at Areté. Sharing our model with a new generation of students in this inspirational setting is truly a blessing.

The 2020-2021 school year has been one for the record books. We wanted to take a moment to acknowledge every Areté student for their resilience, fortitude and ability to pivot from a traditional in-school model to a remote learning environment within a matter of days. Instead of checking out, they leaned in and formed a deeper sense of community while distance learning - a true testament to their character, level of educational commitment and passion for learning. We are going to miss your Zoom faces over the summer and look forward to seeing you all again come fall.

We wish the graduating Class of 2021 nothing but the best as they embark on new adventures and pursue higher education. This year was full of challenges and adversity beyond imagination and they took it all in stride. We will miss each and every one of them and their unique individualism that contributed so much to the Arete community.

There was so much to celebrate with all they've accomplished, such a great milestone. We will surely miss all of them!

High school senior Katie will be attending NYU CAS and will pursue a degree in politics and philosophy with the goal of obtaining her PhD in political science. She hopes to work with unions, in campaign management, or as an investigative journalist before eventually running for public office. When asked to name her favorite Areté memory, "This is hard, but I have to say my shadow day because it was the perfect harbinger of the amazing (and sometimes crazy) experience I would have at Areté over the next two years!"

It was great to see such a wide range of amazing skills and talents from our last Arts Night of the school year. Here are just a few samples of the artistic genius from our photography students and their Grand Theft Photo assignment.

Grand Theft Photo - is something of a protest against our nation's gun culture and the normalization of violence. By hosting an entirely peaceful and non-violent landscape photography class inside a notoriously violent video game, the class was able to demonstrate how we are never locked-in to pre-determined courses of action. Alternative thinking is required to formulate positive solutions.

The Battle Bots gang brought their tricked-out avatars to park day. Kai's turtle-shell design proved once again impenetrable, despite other's efforts to breach his armor. Myles, new to the bot scene, grabbed a toolbox from his truck and built his own formidable entry on the spot. Cheers to the robotics team for stepping up and creating this virtual league during quarantine!

Our last park day of the school year! Areté students enjoyed a variety of activities such as working on their final papers in the open air to training to be a Jedi. Teachers Brian and Ethan surprised students by bringing a giant conical mirror and instructed students to draw an image that they could then burn using the focus of the reflective light, applying math and science to the entire experiment.
