Raizada Learning Collective

Community-Driven Pedagogy and Publishing Colectiva The word "raizada" in Spanish connotes a sense of rootedness and connection to one's cultural heritage.

We are a community-driven pedagogy and publishing house that values teaching and learning through a culturally rooted approach. Our mission is to empower individuals and communities by centering humanity, compassion, truth, redemption, and reclamation of self and destiny in all of our work. It's like a tree with deep, strong roots that anchor it firmly to the earth, allowing it to stand tall and weather any storm that may come its way. Just as the roots of a tree draw nourishment and sustenance from the soil, the concept of raizada suggests a deep connection to one's history, language, and community, which in turn provide a sense of grounding and strength. Like the branches of a tree that reach towards the sky, the idea of raizada allows individuals to reach for their full potential while remaining firmly grounded in their cultural roots.

2026 Florencio Alonso Jr. "Your Voice is Your Weapon" Critical Youth Scholarship Award

It is with immense pride and love that we announce this year's recipient of the Florencio Alonso Jr. "Your Voice is Your Weapon" Critical Youth Scholarship Award: Xavier "Fray" Reyes.

Xavier is a young scholar, artist, and advocate whose voice shows up everywhere it matters. Through his activism, his photography, and the way he builds community wherever he goes, Xavier lives out everything this award was created to honor: pride in identity, a relentless drive to seek the truth, and a dynamic testimonio that refuses to be silenced.

His camera doesn't just capture the West Side, it testifies. His lens holds space for our people, our struggle, our beauty. And behind that lens is a young person who shows up, who organizes, who pulls others in and reminds them that their stories matter. That is exactly the kind of critical, rooted, courageous voice my cousin Junior represented.

Xavier, thank you. Thank you for letting our family continue the legacy of my cousin with this award. You are the absolute best candidate for this award, and you represent everything this scholarship stands for and everything it hopes the next generation will become. We see you. We're proud of you. Keep raising your testimonio. It is, and always will be, your weapon.

This year, we were honored to have been selected to collaborate with the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM) in creating a thematic, exhibit aligned, 15-lesson foundational curriculum.

This work was created with deep care for memory, place, and belonging. Designed through Sankofa, Ubuntu, experiential learning, and culturally sustaining pedagogy, the curriculum invites students to engage history as living and relational, where self and community are inseparable, and offers tools to interpret cultural identity and cultural history. As the curriculum designer, I approached this work as an act of care, honoring Black history in San Antonio and the U.S. Southwest while supporting students in seeing themselves as historians, knowledge keepers, and cultural creators.

Offered as a living foundation and opening chapter, these lessons are intended to grow and deepen alongside the communities they serve.

My team and I just wrapped up our second FutureShock LA site! The program was a beautiful opportunity to reflect on the harm of traditional schooling practices while resurrecting rehumanizing dynamics where youth lead their own learning. It was a remarkable opportunity that offered a critical insight into challenging majoritarian systems in education. We didn't make decisions for youth, we made decisions WITH youth!

They were the first institution that welcomed and encouraged me to share my knowledge with the world & as I decided to establish my own consultancy, they were my first client!
