The Center for Visual Anthropology (CVA) at USC was founded by the acclaimed anthropologist Barbara Myerhoff, best known for her Academy Award-winning documentary Number Our Days (1976). The CVA is dedicated to the incorporation of visual modes of expression into the academic discipline of anthropology. It does so in conjunction with the faculty of the Department of Anthropology through five types of activities: teaching, research and the analysis of visual culture, production of visual projects, archiving and collection, and the sponsorship of conferences and film festivals. In 1984, he collaborated with the USC School of Cinematic Arts to create the MAVA degree (Master of Arts in Visual Anthropology), a 2-3 year terminal Masters program unique in its emphasis on both textual and visual media (film and photography) as components of an academically grounded research project. [3] Asch served as director of the CVA until his death in 1994. The MVA program is open to college graduates who have a background in anthropology, ethnographic film, or cross-cultural visual studies, and to USC undergraduates majoring in Visual Anthropology. We provide a scholarly environment for the study and practice of anthropological media and hands-on training in ethnographic documentary production techniques (camera, sound, editing).

ID: During the day, a group of 50+ people marches down the streets of Hollywood, California, carrying a banner that reads "SoCal Stands For Puerto Rico," flyers that read, "Cancel Puerto Rico's Debt & Pay Reparations," and several Puerto Rican flags.
