Robotic hands with human-like instincts are here. The new MOTIF Hand, created by a USC Viterbi student team led by Assistant Professor Daniel Seita, senses depth, force, and even temperature—thanks to a thermal camera embedded in its palm. These multimodal capabilities let the hand “feel” heat without touching and determine force, mimicking our own intuitive responses. Watch this video to learn more! USC School of Advanced Computing
Rooted in an interdisciplinary approach, the Mark and Mary Stevens School of Computing and AI serves as the nexus for computing and AI research at USC.
Researchers are preparing robots to one day walk on the Moon and Mars—by first testing them on Earth’s sand dunes. 🌌🤖 The LASSIE Project is developing robots that can sense and adapt to complex terrain. Among the leaders driving this effort is USC USC Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering Prof Feifei Qian, collaborating with Oregon State University and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration along with other collaborators to push the boundaries of planetary exploration. Since neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s are on the rise, the need for new ways to detect and address such diseases has never been more urgent.
National Science Foundation (NSF) supported research by USC Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering and USC School of Advanced Computing Prof Paul Bogdan explores a way to better predict how a person's brain ages over time.
The new AI-enabled method can generate a future image of a person's brain from just a single scan.
Pictured here is a visualization showing structured brain atrophy in a subject over a 15-year span.
