Here lies my dear friend and colleage Bill Berry who was the Sacred Crossings grief counsellor for many years.
His beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Anne, cared for him during his Parkinsons journey and was at his bedside when he made his transition.
Here he is attended at his home funeral by his children Jonathan, Donald and Anne-Marie.

In 2005, I bathed my mother's body after she died. I anointed her. Dressed her. Laid her in honor in the home she had lived in for decades.

Neighbors came by. Friends brought tea. The house became the funeral parlor. And everything about it felt right.

That experience changed my life. I realized families had given away one of the most profound healing rituals available to them. We handed our loved ones to professional strangers because nobody told us we had another choice.

I founded Sacred Crossings to give that choice back.

For nearly 40 years, starting during the AIDS crisis in the late 1980s and continuing to this day, I have sat with the dying and the grieving. I have learned that death midwifery is not really about death. It is about creating a container so safe and so full of love that everyone in it, the dying and the living, can feel everything and know they are held.

I recently had a beautiful conversation with for their series The Firekeepers. We talked about what I witnessed at bedsides during the AIDS crisis. What my mother's death taught me about dying well. What a three-day home vigil actually looks like and what it does to the people who experience it. Why we gave the most powerful healing ritual in human history to an industry. And what it costs us every single day that we do not take it back.

It was so important for me to do this, and it’s an afternoon that will stay with me forever. We have had so little agency in these last few weeks but this gave me a sense of having a tiny bit.
