I remember when I was a girl watching my mom in the kitchen magically creating a fancy chocolate box overflowing with chocolate mousse for one of her catering events. Then she would go out to the backyard, pick a few leaves from the tree, wash them off and paint them with chocolate. After an hour in the freezer, I would help her peel the leaves off, leaving a gorgeous chocolate leaf to decorate her desserts.
🍫🍃
Boxes and leaves out of chocolate? It seemed impossible. But observing each step, the impossible became magically possible.
How can we make an edible teddy bear or airplane? Use your child’s limitless imagination to make the impossible possible.
What creative food art will you try next?

Things are getting fizzy around here!
🫧🍋🥤
There’s a special magic with chemical reactions - a real WOW factor that kindles that spark of curiosity in children.
🫧
This science project is taste-safe (but watch out for too much baking soda - yuck!).
🫧
When we were done making the “magic potion” my 5 year old sat for almost an hour with a bowl of baking soda and a bowl of vinegar and a medicine dropper. He was inspired to continue the experiment and explore different combination of ingredients to see what would happen.
🫧
And that gave me time to wash the dishes. A win for everyone!

Science in the kitchen! There are so many skills built through cooking - and today we’re focusing on science!
🧪
Cooking and science both encourage kids to use trial and error, and when something goes wrong with a recipe to use it as a chance to investigate, predict and experiment.
👩🍳
Baking in particular shows children how different ingredients combine and go through chemical reactions to make something entirely new.
🍞🥖
Bread baking teaches about microorganisms with yeast – just look at the wonder on kids faces as they watch yeast bubble up and grow.
👩🔬
When children are curious and engaged - magic happens! Coming next is an edible science experiment!

Cooking with my kids helps me feel like a kid myself. You know what I mean?
👧
Maybe it’s the sense of pride when it comes to practicing and improving on a new skill like measuring, pouring or chopping.
🥣
Maybe it’s the sense of wonder and discovery when you mix a bunch of random ingredients and it magically turns into something delicious.
🥄
Maybe it’s the joy on their faces as they’re licking the chocolate off the spoon.
🧑🍳👩🍳
Whatever the reason, I’ll take it! Along with an extra spoon for me to lick.

When my kids were younger they had to keep a moon journal for school - every night we went outside to look at the moon and draw a picture of the phase the moon was in. Every night. For a month. Did we actually do this? Ummmm, maybe 4 nights?
🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑🌒🌓
I’m a real believer in hands-on learning. Kids learn best by DOING. So when my daughter decided to make the moon phases out of cucumber slices I was all for it! And a 10 minute activity was definitely more manageable than a 30 day one. A win for all!
