Susan Ossman is an artist, anthropologist, performer, academic, and writer. Ossman's expressions are political, reflecting a broad spectrum of her life's experiences, from immigration/migration to diversity, inclusion, freedom, and health care. This exhibition presents a collection of Ossman's last ten years of work, which includes paintings and several installations. I hope that the "States of Exception" provides the audience with a moment to contemplate and reflect on the 'state' of the world as exemplified and conveyed in her art.

You are invited to an exhibition “STATES OF EXCEPTION” by SUSAN OSSMAN opens this coming Tuesday, January 21, 2025!
Reception and Artist Walk-Through: Saturday, January 25, 2025, 2 -5 PM
Exhibition Dates: January 21 - February 20, 2025
Ironically, the exhibition’s title, ‘States of Exception,’ seems to have been created for our recent record-breaking disasters in Los Angeles. However, given that the hermeneutics of this exhibition is broad and deep, one may easily conclude that America’s recent experiences are prophesized by Ossman’s intuitive grasp of our zeitgeist.

“Escrava Anastacia,” 2020
A great deal of mystery surrounds Anastacia’s origins. Some claim she was born of royal lineage in Africa, while others suggest she was born in Brazil. All accounts agree that she was a slave of exceptional beauty with arresting blue eyes. She was purported to have possessed remarkable healing abilities and a number of miracles are attributed to her. She was very cruelly treated by her master and was made to wear a muzzle-like facemask and heavy iron collar. The reasons for this punishment vary from trying to incite other slaves escape, to the claim that she resisted r**e by her master, to the master’s mistress jealous of her beauty. After a prolonged period of suffering, she died of tetanus brought on by the muzzle she had been forced to wear. It is claimed that she healed the son of the master and mistress and forgave them as she died. There have been repeated attempts to have her canonized as a saint, but the Catholic Church refuses to acknowledge her existence, and has had her image removed from all church properties in Brazil. Nonetheless, Anastacia has many devoted followers among the poor and disenfranchised, and shrines to her can be found throughout the country.
