LOSH honored this year’s Workers’ Memorial Day alongside our communities at two meaningful events hosted by Southern California Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health and National Day Laborer Organizing Network. As we commemorate the lives of every worker injured or killed on the job, we stand with our partners and renew our commitment to ensuring that every worker returns home safely at the end of each day.
Here are some moments from these events, which captured the spirit of the Workers’ Memorial Day slogan: “Mourn the dead and fight for the living.” Thank you to both SoCalCOSH and NDLON for inviting us to be a part of their Workers’ Memorial Day.

Today we celebrate International Workers’ Day, also known as . This holiday originated in the late nineteenth century when a national federation of unions launched a campaign to establish an 8-hour workday by May 1, 1886. Workers at the time routinely labored from anywhere between 10-to-14 hours a day; steelworkers, for example, had to work 24-hour shifts twice a month in dangerous conditions with no safety protections. After 1886, international labor groups started to commemorate May 1st as International Workers’ Day or May Day. On this day the UCLA Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program honors workers all over the world as we continue to call for worker safety, health, and justice.
