Real improvement starts with understanding how learning actually works.

I'm Gregg Goodhart, a learning coach and educator with over 30 years of experience helping serious learners understand why practice stops working and how to redesign it.

Your brain loves getting better at stuff.

The feeling of getting measurably better at something is what makes it start to feel truly meaningful.

In this video I walk through what deliberate practice actually is, why it works on the brain, and where most people go wrong when they try to apply it.

Are you a teacher?

One of the things I have looked forward to since starting this business in 2013, after 13 years of teaching high school (and more teaching college, and private studio, and…), has been to use it as a forum to connect with other teachers.

Last month I invited teachers on my email list AND their students to join us for the monthly Practiclass for free, and it was so much fun that I want to open it to all teachers.

Private studio, large rehearsal, Bach to Rock and everything in between. If you teach regularly I'll put you on the teacher guest list AND you can invite as many of your students as you like, just share the personal Zoom link I send you.

They are also welcome to apply for one of the coaching spots.
They could have an experience like Edward (at any level of playing, not just his)

“. . .the process made me a believer in about half an hour. . .A summer in Aspen didn't fix some of the problems I've begun to truly remedy in just a week. . .”

All of the conversation about the last Practiclass got me thinking that I might want to do some more. If that is something you'd like then let me know here. https://gregggoodhart.com/practiclass-waitlist/
Here is what I sent my email list. If you are not on that you might want to be!..

I got quite a response after the December holiday Practiclass. Thanks, everyone! I'm thinking about trying to find time to do another.

Nick wrote,

"Gregg. This is absolute gold. Thank you so much for this. Several lightbulbs lit up for me..."

The discussion online turned to regret for missing it. They had already seen one, or knew enough, but realized there is years of insight to be had watching these processes taught by a knowledgeable teacher who can guide us to greater skill.

There is always some new nuance to pick up. And that is the difference between where we are and what comes next to move us closer and closer to our goals.

The first rule of Dunning-Kruger Club is we don't know we're in Dunning-Kruger Club.

I’m really busy, and am getting involved in all sorts of long term projects. You'll hear about some soon. I can find some time to do a Practiclass in the next few weeks if there is interest, so I thought I'd ask if you want me to prioritize it.

I don't have a number in my head, but I'll know when it is right. If enough of you are interested, then I'll find time one way or another. You are worth it.

The real way to develop practicing expertise over time is by gathering knowledge then experiencing it in many different situations to grow the skill.

This is sometimes called 'multivariate experience'.

Real life continuously throws unique situations at us which ask us to use an ever growing foundation of knowledge to think critically to solve any problem.

There is a word for that - learning.

Let me know.

Having a knowledgeable guide to help, and I teach everything I'm doing to the audience, is the best way to grow this.

Practiclass Registration Free 12/27/2023

Open to all, feel free to forward.

I invented the Practiclass to maybe, just possibly, have you consider that 'talent' isn't what we think it is. Maybe a lack of it is not keeping us from how we really want to perform.

Maybe there are other reasons.

Maybe it's worth investigating.

The reality is we are not practicing the way our brains learn best.

Not your fault, nobody taught it to us. At best we get 'tips and tricks' and 'hacks' to figure out the most complicated part of learning music - how the brain really learns while we practice.

This is like giving someone a fish, they eat for a day. Learning how and why things work so we can truly understand and use them to creatively to solve problems in every practice is like teaching someone to fish, and they eat for a lifetime. Everyone is on a 'practice journey' of discovery.

This is what we're missing.

It works for all learning - theory, ear training, history, science, sports, everything.

It's a secret that shouldn't be a secret.

It's like instant talent!

It is cognitive science.

And I'm going to give a rare free Practiclass on Friday.

You should check it out.

I'll explain to the audience what we do as I work with two volunteers, why it works, how it interacts with other areas of learning, common misunderstandings about these things, and more, so we can start to use it in our practice.

You can even volunteer to be one of the lucky practicers who I get to work with and and Feel The Blearn! (If you are learning the difficult stuff the right way it should make your brain 'burn' a little. More on that Friday)

Seriously, you don't even have to play well. The requirement is that you bring something that is giving you trouble. Save your 'best' single performance attempt for those other masterclasses! Bring those things that you can kind of get, but never really pull of in performance, to the Practiclass!

Then I'll take questions from everyone. Ask away.

I'm even throwing in a holiday gift - if you can't make it I'll put the recording up for you for a week, just be sure to register for the class.

Deliberate Practice 11/24/2023

Announcing the Lightbulb Masterclass Series of quick 30 minute instruction to begin understanding the foundation of the most important areas that are part of the results oriented practice you've been trying to understand.

I was coaching a guy last week. Someone who keeps up with this stuff, and has a good knowledge. We spent a jam packed hour getting things going.

And he said something to the effect of, ‘I knew all this stuff, I know how it works, but for some reason I couldn’t get it together until you showed me’.

Then I got this email from someone else in response to my last coaching offer that went out. I was able to offer a little advice to a question, and got this in return.

"I’ve tried to put everything in to my practice sessions, but I find myself slipping into my old ways of not reflecting and playing on from my isolated sections before the end. I’ll give this a go. I’m afraid I can’t afford one to one sessions. Thank you for your help."

Everybody needs this along with all of the other information and instruction necessary to play, play play.

There is really nobody else teaching in this space, and that is quite a responsibility. How to get this to everyone, even my friend who wrote the email above?

We’ll start with a class on how to really apply deliberate practice, which allows us to act in our own best interest, so the next thing that happens in our life is what we want, not just what we allow, to happen to us.

Sound easy?

Now do that for every single thing you do every minute in practice.

It is simple, but not easy.

That is pretty much how deliberate practice works.

I'll take care of the not easy part for you.

The way I will teach it, it will only take 5-10 minutes a day, like, 5 days or so in a week to start getting good at it, so you'll have the time, and probably have questions. Ask in the call.

The series will launch in 2024 with the opportunity to take part in the live classes that will make up the recorded series. It will include expert instruction, written materials, recorded video instruction, Q&A following the 30 minute instruction and a follow up live call.

$27 per class, but you don't have to wait, and you don't have to pay full price if you grab it by midnight Monday!
