We are honored to welcome Sasha Troufanov and Sapir Cohen to USC this Wednesday, October 14!

Both survivors of captivity in Gaza, Sasha and Sapir have endured unimaginable challenges. Recently married, they now share an inspiring story of courage, resilience, unwavering faith, and the incredible power of love.

It's Oct 7 today. Three years. On Instagram, on my feed, it's Oct. 7 again. People are sharing messages. The videos. The recordings. The confusion and pain and hurt we all lived with for months. Not able to look, but not willing to look away.

Random bits of memory come back. There's the shared elements of trauma - what we all saw and heard. But there's also the personal lens. Where were you? How did you experience things? What was it like in your personal little corner?

Oct. 6. Our biggest issue at that innocent moment was Trojan Family Weekend. The university had chosen Shemini Atzeret as the date. How could we host a formal Shabbat dinner and the customary dancing with the Torahs and celebration? We adapt. Shabbat dinner first, with the parents and the university's president. And then at 11pm dancing for those who stick around.

A world away it is morning, and the attacks are beginning. We are oblivious. The President talks about the importance of the Jewish community on campus. About being there for us. Then it's Q&A. A parent asks a pointed question about why USC hasn't adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism. She responds. It feels awkward. I choose to highlight the fact that even without adopting it, they are already legally bound by that definition. I believe it is better to educate than attack. Who knew how relevant that would be. But it becomes the university's position, and eventually they do formally adopt the IHRA definition as well.

The formal part of the evening closes. We're mustering the students still there, beginning the celebratory dancing. A student from Israel walks in and asks to speak to me quietly on the side. Something's going on in the south. Something bad. I had to come here, be with our people.
We say a prayer. We dance, as we will repeatedly over the next 2 days of Shemini Atzeret and Simchas Torah, even as more and more reports arrive. That's what Jews do. It's the holiday. Even when we cry, we dance. But it's with a sense of foreboding. With a dark shadow hovering over the traditional songs and circles. Please Hashem, help our people. Please Hashem protect us.

This past week we have loved shaking Lulav with everyone, but now that sukkot is over is back!

If you would like to put on tefillin in honor of the third anniversary of October 7, please come by anytime. We are so honored to be hosting two freed hostages next week on October 14 in honor of this important day.

Sasha Troufanov & Sapir Cohen were struggling with their relationship, when they were both taken hostage on Oct. 7. Through the months of hell that followed, their faith and resilience carried them through. After finally being released, they found their way back to one another stronger than before. Their extraordinary story - from unimaginable darkness to standing together under the chuppah - is a powerful expression of hope and the triumph of love.

Keep those shakes coming! Its been so special to see so many of you come out and shake the Lulav and esrog!
Tomorrow is the last day to do this mitzvah so make sure you come by the sukkah on Trousdale or the Chabad House to shake!

And don't forget to come celebrate with us Friday night and Saturday night for Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah! (This is Chabad's registered party of the semester and you want to be there!)
