I used to exercise 15 hours a week. Wow time flies! After 10 months with no exercise (NOT PREGGERS), and 3 months into this experiment, boy have I had some setbacks. I expected to be further along in my re-intro to exercise but my spinal issues had other plans. Jan-Mar I started each month with high hopes but NOPE, spinal veto. BTW, I don’t think these pics show the true size of those love handles. Lol. My metabolism has slowed way down and I now have a sweet tooth that I never had before. My body just seems to want to gain weight now. That’s new. I’m also seeing my first signs of cellulite. Motivation to exercise has been up and down with my frustration over my back and my joints are achy a lot. More importantly, my ARSE is getting too damn big for my clothes! I was already reaching the limit when I started this. Now most of my clothes don’t fit. I’ve turned into a 24/7 leggings and t-shirts girl…except that the leggings are getting too small too! Rut roh! There have been some serious battles fought between my jeans and my body!⠀
⠀
April’s so far better in terms of starting to exercise but there’s not much I can do, stretching and mobility movements. Ironically, I’m starting from ground zero doing the same things I recommend to my clients who are active seniors, new to exercise or obese. I’ve also made no moves to go back to my old, healthier eating habits. I’m gonna live in this space for a while and see if I really can love body at any size. ⠀
⠀
I’m now at that crossroad where so many women find themselves in the struggle. So do I buy more bras or try to survive with less oxygen? If you’ve been here before, which did you choose? How’d that go?⠀

What does it feel like to be new to exercise? Yes, this might be a bad idea! I may have to buy a new wardrobe! I already have several pairs of pants that I tried on that are telling me “No girl, that’s not gonna work”. 😳⠀

I’m starting with injuries and being non-active. Both are new territory for me but hands up if you’re starting 2019 Day 2 from the same place or someplace similar. ⠀

An interesting study from 2012, suggests that the transversus abdominis (TVA) muscles of the abdomen can be better utilized when co-contracted with the ankle in resisted dorsiflexion (foot flexed towards the face instead of pointing the toes). WHAAAT?
Sucking in your abs plus flexing your foot can help target the ab muscles that play a large role in mitigating chronic lower back pain. It showed that contracting these muscles simultaneously could strengthen the TVA faster and help teach a person how to control it, helping to alleviate low back pain.
The study included a very small number of people and the methods admittedly were not the greatest so don’t believe everything you read. HOWEVER, the premise of the study is interesting and easy enough for a person to test with their own experience. Do you suffer from low back pain? What do you do to alleviate it?
If you wanna get all sciencey, here’s the study:
