Happy Holidays Whalewatch Style!

All had a 🐋 whaley 🐋 good time at the Cabrillo Whalewatch Holiday Party!

✨️In addition to the joy of the Holidays, this event celebrates the closure of the first chapter of the training program, with close to 70 people successfully completing the required and always-dreaded *exam*! Congratulations 🎊 👏 🐬 (Twenty more will take the exam at a later date, for a total of 91 2023-2024 Naturalists!!)

It also marks the soon-to-start whale watching season. While gray whales are already trekking along our coast, the whale watch season traditionally kicks off on December 26th.

Why Whales Disappeared off South Georgia Island 12/01/2023

Very interesting research by Charles Scott Baker of the Marine Mammal Institute - Oregon State University that highlights the complexity of ecosystems and the difficulties faced in trying to undo past blunders.

Why Whales Disappeared off South Georgia Island Thousands of whales were wiped out in the Antarctic Ocean. Now, after commercial whaling was brought to an end in the Southern Ocean, whales are making a comeback. But they aren't the same whales off South Georgia Island.

We had a FIN-tastic time on Tuesday when we kicked off the 53rd season of Cabrillo Whalewatch Naturalist Training! What a legacy of education and outreach in and around Los Angeles, and beyond!

Join the fun! There's still time to become a Cabrillo Whalewatch Naturalist - we will accept new volunteers until Tuesday, October 17th.

Yay whales! 🐳🌊
