THE CITY SCHOOL is a high-performing tuition-free public charter middle school in the heart of LA.
Founded in 2012, The City School (grades 6-12) provides an exceptional education to a diverse student body. VISION
City Charter Schools was founded to prove a school model that is seldom seen in public education: Our schools are intentionally diverse, inclusive, and equitable. We hold all students to high expectations, while providing them with a supportive community and immersive project-based le
arning experience that spark their curiosity and deeper thinking about meaningful real-world problems. Schools should reflect the diverse lived experiences of all of our people, and prepare students to navigate the challenges, opportunities, and relationships they will encounter beyond our walls. We strive to offer a new model of public education that inspires us all to believe in the possibility that school can be fun, challenging, socially enriching, and truly reflective of the diverse world we all navigate everyday. MISSION
City Charter Schools graduates are self-aware, reflective individuals who can draw on social-emotional competencies, cultural competency, and critical thinking ability to thrive personally, and positively impact their communities. In order to fulfill our mission, we:
- Provide a constructivist, project-based learning environment in which teachers guide students through active learning processes to develop conceptual understanding and critical thinking.
- Establish a culture that puts relationships and social-emotional support first so that every student is known and gets the support they need to succeed.
- Prioritize the development of cultural competency at all levels of the organization, investing in anti-bias training for staff, and multicultural curriculum for students.
- Give faculty time, resources, autonomy and a collaborative atmosphere to continually develop their skills and create, evaluate and refine curricula, and reflect on the learning of their students.
- Communicate regularly with students’ families, seeking family involvement in the life of the school, and continually reaching out to all families in the neighborhood to ensure a diverse and inclusive learning community. VALUES
Educational Excellence: Instruction reflects high expectations, inspires curiosity, builds critical skills and promotes deeper thinking to close opportunity gaps. Diversity: We build intentionally diverse, welcoming, and equitable learning communities where students and staff develop self-awareness and cultural competence to build a better world. Community: The school is intentionally inclusive: we put relationships first and develop social-emotional competencies while engaging all stakeholders in creating a unified, safe, and supportive community within and beyond the school.

This month our 8th graders will be taking a special grade level trip up to Mount Kare to bond, connect with nature, and celebrate the many accomplishments of their middle school career.
Despite having navigated some of the toughest developmental years through a global pandemic, they have managed to come out victorious and will now be moving on to High School 😭 We remember their little shining faces as 6th graders and can’t believe how quickly this has all gone.
Here’s a little preview of what’s in store for them.
