📣 Student Spotlight: Nicole Trigueros Salazar
🎓 Honors College | Biology Major
📍Volunteer work| Nicole is running a Shoe Drive Fundraiser until November 30 to support underserved communities in Costa Rica. “These shoes not only help me get to this opportunity, but also give others a second chance with much-needed footwear,” she says. “The medical program gave me hands-on experience working alongside local doctors.”
Inspiration for getting involved this Fall:
Nicole shares that volunteering offered a perspective no classroom could provide. “I return home knowing my time and effort may help a child grow up healthier, ease a parent’s suffering, and remind a community they are supported in their right to health. I also had the chance to connect with others who share the same passion.”

📣 Student Spotlight: Mark Raspopov
🎓 Honors College | Computer Science Major| Psychology, Math, and Biomedical Engineering minor
📍Researcher at the AI and Data Science Research Lab
Meet Mark, a dedicated student in the Honors College at CSULA, majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Psychology, Math, and Biomedical Engineering. He is currently working in the AI and Data Science Research Lab dedicated to predicting wildfire spread using AI in collaboration with NASA and the City of Los Angeles where the aim of his involvement is to create positive change in our community, acknowledging how wildfires are prevalent in Los Angeles, and knowing where the fire will spread helps people evacuate in time.
Inspiration for getting involved this summer:
“I had a lot of free time and wanted to use it productively. I’m taking 6 courses (max of 18 units) during the summer to fulfill the requirements for my major and 3 minors in a total of 4 years.”
Proudest moment this summer:
“I’m proud of continuing to work on the wildfire spread prediction research project together with graduate students as a 14 year old. This project has the potential to save many lives. The work is challenging, but knowing that better predictions could help people evacuate sooner and help firefighters plan their response makes it feel meaningful. Each small improvement we make could make a real difference when wildfires threaten communities.“

📣 Student Spotlight: Alyssa Polk
🎓 Honors College | Psychology Major
📍Intern at Community Re-entry program (UOP psychology department)
Meet Alyssa, a dedicated student in the Honors College at CSULA, majoring in Psychology. She is currently interning at the Community re-entry program (UOP psychology department), where her goal is to “empower individuals with meaningful skills, boost their confidence, and help them build a path toward long-term employment and stability.”
Alyssa also mentions how “As a psychology major planning to become a psychiatrist, this internship has given me valuable hands-on exposure to working with individuals who live with serious mental health conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism. Through leading groups on topics like anger management, coping skills, and medication education, I’ve grown more confident in my communication, empathy, and leadership skills.”
Inspiration for getting involved this summer:
“What inspired me to get involved this summer was my passion for mental health and my long term-goal of becoming a psychiatrist. I have always been drawn to understanding people’s minds and helping those who are often overlooked. I carry a lot of compassion and understanding, qualities that some people lack, which allow me to connect, support, and help these individuals that others may walk away from or think of as odd.”
Proudest moment this summer:
One thing she mentioned made her proud this summer was “when an individual told me I was going to be Doctor Polka Dot. My last name is Polk, and hearing that these individuals believe in me and truly feel a change and growth in my presence really made me proud. They have also told me that I was at the center for a reason, to heal and support these individuals to make change in our community. “
