Dear USC Alumni & Friends,

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Abel Amaya, a member of the Latino Trojan Familia. Mr. Amaya dedicated 20 years of his career as Director of (formerly El Centro Chicano). Mr. Amaya helped countless students find a home away from home on USC’s campus, and his efforts and focus on student retention provided the building blocks of what La CASA at USC is today. We are grateful to have had a pillar like Mr. Amaya in the Trojan family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones.

A memorial service for Mr. Abel Amaya will be held at Emmanuel Hispanic Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at 4:00 PM. The church is located at 1111 N. Mountain Avenue, Claremont, CA 91711.

Did you know?!

In 2002, Star Wars creator George Lucas told Time that the revolutionary-era women of Mexico inspired Leia’s look. “In the 1977 film, I was working very hard to create something different that wasn’t fashion, so I went with a kind of Southwestern Pancho Villa woman revolutionary look, which is what that is,” he said. “The buns are basically from the turn-of-the-century Mexico. Then it took such hits and became such a thing.” 🙌💖
