Explore enjoy and protect the planet! Nearby Nature connects youth and families to nature and the San Gabriel Mountains.

Sierra Club’s Nearby Nature initiative connects people to nature close to home by engaging youth and communities to explore, enjoy, and protect public parks, waters, trails, gardens and other green spaces in and around urban areas. The initiative is specifically working with young people to facilitate their connection to the outdoors, create diversity within the environmental movement and build the next generation of environmental stewards for our planet.

Introducing Imagine 2200: Our new cli-fi contest 01/14/2021

We’re calling for 3,000- to 5,000-word stories that envision the next 180 years of climate progress — roughly seven generations. The winning writer will be awarded $3,000, with the second- and third-place finalists receiving $2,000 and $1,000 Our board of expert literary judges includes authors Adrienne Maree Brown, Morgan Jerkins, and Kiese Laymon.

Awesome news coming out of DC today!

VICTORY! Thanks to your advocacy, the Every Kid Outdoors Act has passed through Congress as part of the public lands bill -- helping 4th graders and their families get outside to National Parks for free! The bill also includes:

🔹 Permanent authorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) -- a fund that helps acquire new public lands and expand nearby nature access.
🔹 Establishment of more than one million acres of new wilderness
🔹 New national monument in Mississippi dedicated to civil rights leader Medgar Evers
🔹 Designation by Congress of wild and scenic rivers in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts
🔹 Permanent protection from mining, drilling and logging for millions of acres across the West
🔹 Authorization of a 21st Century Conservation Service Corps program to strengthen conservation career pathways for youth and young veterans
