Creating with purpose! Summer at Brentwood's BCIL Design with Purpose camp teamed up with GoBabyGo! and local hospitals to customize battery-powered, ride-on cars for three children with limited mobility.
Middle School students visited both Children's Hospital LA and UCLA to see how clinical teams treat and diagnose children, observing how advanced technology measures muscle function and motion and gaining insight into physical therapy intervention strategies. Back in the design lab, they used PVC cutters, power tools, Cricut sticker makers, 3D printers, soldering, and wiring to design, build, and tailor vehicles that fit the specific requirements of each child.
Once the projects were finished, each GoBabyGo! child was given their customized vehicle to take home and zip around in new and exciting ways!

For the first time ever, Summer at Brentwood was proud to introduce the Flight School: Drone Activation camp!
It began with each student learning the basics of flight, then quickly transformed into a journey of creativity, engineering, and confidence. Students explored the science of flight and engineering principles before designing and navigating their own custom drone obstacle courses with a handheld quadcopter drone, perfecting impressive aerial maneuvers and showcasing their growing piloting skills through a variety of exciting drone tricks.

Congratulations to Sophia S. '29, who won an Honorable Mention in the STEM Choice Awards International Competition 2026!
Using C. elegans microscopic worms as a model organism for human metabolism, this project tested how different natural and artificial sugars impact growth and fat storage. Results showed that levulose — a natural sweetener — was the only sweetener to cause significant weight gain compared to the control group.
Her BCIL project achieved 1st Place in the Molecular & Microbiology Category and ranked as one of the Top 10 projects overall in the entire international competition. Well done, Sophia!

That's a wrap on our BCIL Summer STEAM & Entrepreneurship Camp! During camp, our Middle Schoolers went from beginners to young entrepreneurs, designers, and scientists. They got hands-on in the science lab running experiments, learned design thinking to tackle real-world challenges, and mastered basic 3D design and printing skills.
As part of the camp, students visited the Santa Monica Farmers Market to interview vendors, then spent the following week turning those insights into their own farmer's market stands to highlight their various ventures. Products included banana bread and cookies that were made from bananas considered too spotted to sell, custom puzzles and 3D-printed keychains to bring awareness to endangered species, pesticide-free fruit cups, and more. From market research to prototyping to pitching, these students did an amazing job putting all their learning into action!

What do singer Em Beihold's artistic nails have to do with Brentwood School?
It all started in the BCIL Entrepreneurship class, where Justine Brooks '26 pitched her nail art business, Just Nails. Her teachers helped her see the venture as a real business rather than just a hobby, guiding her through the fundamentals of branding, website building, and professional presentation. By exploring core concepts like customer development, product creation, and revenue generation, Justine laid the essential groundwork for her company.
In just one month, Instagram account grew from 500 to 4,000 followers on Instagram. Her business continues to grow, highlighted with a recent order for custom nail art created for artist Em Beihold's latest album!
Congratulations, Justine! We look forward to seeing what's next for your growing business.
