A UCLA student-initiated, student-led organization exemplifying sustainability in the 21st century.

Sustainability Action Research (SAR) is a student-initiated, student-designed, and student-facilitated research program offered through the Institute of the Environment & Sustainability (IoES). In the winter and spring quarters of each academic year, students on Sustainability Action Research Teams are partnered with a campus stakeholder to research, rethink, investigate, and tackle UCLA’s greatest sustainability issues.

Hello and thank you to everyone who came and participated in final presentations last week!

To all of our stakeholders: thank you for supporting our students and their ambitions to make the UCLA campus a model for sustainability in every facet to create an environment that is resilient, zero-waste, carbon neutral, conscious of its purchasing power, and supportive of its students basic needs, and more.

To all of our students: thank you for your hard work over the last two quarters. Thank you for your passion, your perseverance, and the countless hours you have all put into bettering your campus, your environment, and your world. It has truly been an amazing experience to watch all of you grow and accomplish so much in such a short time. Every single member of our program this year has blossomed as a leader and has developed the necessary toolset for creating positive change wherever you go. We can’t wait to see all that you accomplish during your time as students and beyond the UCLA campus.

To learn more about our work, please check our site for each team’s project page, blog post updates, and press releases over the past two quarters at the link below, and check back after finals week to view each team’s midterm and final report.

Meet the Sustainable Purchasing Team! Their goal is to improve the sustainability and ethicality of UCLA’s promotional product supply chain. Such products include sunglasses, toys, and other “freebies”, which often become single-use items destined for a landfill.

To find out about the assessments they've made throughout the year and how the team has collaborated with vital on-campus stakeholders and vendors to improve UCLA's promotional product supply chain, check out their blog here:

Meet the Food Justice and Basic Needs Team! Their objective is to make basic needs resources more accessible to students on the UCLA campus by improving communications strategies that direct students to the resources they need.

“Students need to be students, and should not have to take so much time and energy to find the hidden gems of aid here on campus. Our SAR team aims to lower the stress levels of students here at UCLA by giving them a simple way to access the care they need. Overall, we want resources to be more accessible and helpful.”

Meet the SAR Zero Waste Team!

The Zero Waste team is conducting research on the use of educational signage and outreach campaigns to increase waste diversion at Young Research Library (YRL) with the intention of beginning the process to implementing a permanent zero-waste system in the library.

A recent waste audit, conducted week ten of the quarter system when library use rises as students study for their finals, revealed that 85% of 600 lbs of waste in the waste stream was divertable meaning it could have been composted or recycled.

Last week, the team conducted their own waste audit at YRL, and found that 78.7% of the waste they sorted could have been diverted from landfill.
