The School of Los Angeles

An independent school in the heart of Old Hollywood. Where barriers crumble and a community grows.

At SLA, we abide one simple truth: The best educational tool for any young person is the collaboration and camaraderie of peers from different backgrounds—peers who have stories and perspectives to share, the stuff of life that simply cannot be gleaned from a textbook. A truly exceptional, transformative education requires a diverse and equitable learning environment. It gives students access to entire worlds and worldviews they might never otherwise encounter. It opens their hearts and minds to the concerns, struggles, and joys of others—knowledge that will forever shape their convictions and actions in life.

Dissecting flowers turns out to be a novel and experiential way to learn about the reproductive lives of plants. (Besides, if they were dissecting frogs we probably wouldn't be posting close-ups on Instagram.)

Flashback Thursday: Students were riveted by Commons speaker Chris Thomas's talk on the creative, storytelling, and psychological power of film music and sound design. They were treated to a live demonstration of adding music and sound events to video and could see the results in real time. It was an absolute thrill to see the inner workings of filmmaking laid bare and made comprehensible to students young and old. Thanks to Chris, a composer for film, theme parks, video games, and a TED X speaker whose work can be heard from Fortnite to CSI to Knott's Berry Farm!

SciWhy Club—the name that says it all. It's a club driven by curiosity—where students can ask, "how does that work?" or "what if I set this on fire?" or "what is goo?" and then go about finding the answer with the collaboration of science faculty. SciWhy is driven by student questions, allowing their core science curriculum to serve as a backbone to authentic inquiry and experimentation in the field.

A peak behind the scenes at dress rehearsal for Upper School theatre's Little Women. SLA students are responsible for tech crew, makeup and costume design, props, and stage management—emphasizing creativy and the thrill of problem solving in artmaking. In this case, the cast, crew, and director Emily Mae work quickly through lighting cues, adjusting on the fly to a last-minute change in venue and reblocking the show for a thrust stage.

Making a movie isn't all glamour and glitz. It's mostly small crews huddled around monitors, boom operators squeezing into strange spaces, and actors harriedly getting off book. In our usual learn-by-doing way, SLA is building a film program that actually looks like how first movies get made.

Buddy Days are a chance for SLA's oldest and youngest to come together over some fun and games, a meal, or a dedicated conversation. Grade six students get to learn from seniors about SLA's oldest customs, traditions, and hidden passageways. Seniors get the opportunity to know the next generation of Coyotes. Buddy Days at SLA are a great example of what makes student life here so unique.

Upper School Latinx Literature students recently embarked on a trip to Calexico, at the U.S. southern border. We are excited about the unique ways in which our Service and Justice Program has expanded experiential learning at SLA. The U.S. southern border is a major local and national agenda item that is also close to the hearts and lived experiences of many of our families. It is a crucial part of our curriculum to engage students critically with the realities of global migration, specifically the economic, social, and legal dynamics at play in a local community in a border town.
