⭕️ This is an image of a woman – peering at us, as if to establish eye contact, four thousand years hence.
And we look back, in turn, peering at her world.
Through our project, we aim to bring her back more fully.
Because there is a context to her face.
It is the context defined by the moment when, and the spot where, we first found her.
The context of the city where she was fashioned.
The context of the larger culture that shaped the tastes, beliefs, ambitions of the people who held her gaze.
It is this context we seek to establish, these many levels of a life once lived, which we now aim to recover and to re-embed in our own lives.

⭕️ Music in the Urkesh palace

A seal of queen Uqnitum gives us a glimpse of a musical performance such as would have taken place in the royal palace of Urkesh.

A singer and a lyre player face each other. Seated on a stool, they are shown in the act of performing for the listening pleasure of the queen and her entourage.

The sound you hear is a modern rendering of a Hurrian hymn such as you might have heard had you been part of the queen's entourage.

⭕️ Tell Mozan, ancient Urkesh - at a glance
تل موزان، أوركيش القديمة - لمحة عامة

Tell Mozan is the site of the ancient city of Urkesh - which was known from myth and history, and which our excavations have firmly placed at this location in northeastern Syria. Its beginnings are as yet unknown, but they date back to the at least the early part of the fourth millennium B.C. It was a main center of the Hurrians, who celebrated it in their myths as the home of the father of the gods, Kumarbi. It was also the capital of a kingdom that controlled the highlands immediately to the north, where the supplies of copper were located that made the city wealthy.

One of the current student presents the program here: https://www.facebook.com/WydzialHistoriiUniwersytetuWarszawskiego/videos/2780396982111174 /

Some essential information:
The curriculum is based on history, archaeology and studies on culture and religion.

The program also offer general education classes on the ancient world. The obligatory canon of knowledge (e.g., history, ancient literature and philosophy) has the possibility of broadening individual interests through the addition of modules on early Christianity and literature, ancient Judaism, history of women, history of ancient slavery and discriminated groups, and the plurality of legal systems among other topics. A distinctive feature of this program is the field training: not only practical geodata collection, but also an engrossing, Mediterranean tour, funded by the Faculty.

Students will also choose from a wide variety of courses such as epigraphy, papyrology, numismatics, ancient historiography, the interpretation of cuneiform texts or specialized classes in source criticism or the editing of ancient texts.

An additional module focuses on developing competences in digital humanities and academic writing. The module includes diverse workshops on the use of digital tools for text processing, in particular the editing and data processing used in the work of historians, papyrologists, epigraphers and numismatists.

All interested in this program may contact us writing directly to Pawel Nowakowski .
