More than 50 student research projects. Six weeks of full-time faculty mentorship. Ten years of undergraduate discovery.

For the past decade, the Loyola Marymount University Summer Opportunities for Advanced Research (SOAR) program has given LMU Seaver College students the opportunity to spend six weeks conducting full-time research alongside expert faculty mentors.

This summer, LMU Seaver College celebrated the program's 10th anniversary by showcasing more than 50 student research projects across science, engineering, and mathematics. From supporting NASA's Europa Clipper mission to advancing environmental cleanup and healthy aging, students are contributing to research that addresses real-world challenges.

At LMU, research opportunities begin early. Students work alongside faculty mentors, explore the questions that inspire them, and gain experience presenting their work at poster sessions and academic conferences, with some even co-authoring research publications.

For Loyola Marymount University student Sammy Marvin '28, a summer internship at LAist is an opportunity to build the skills, professional connections, and confidence that will prepare her for a career in journalism.

Through the Bellarmine Summer Internship Program, Sammy secured a paid internship where she is pitching stories, conducting interviews, writing articles, recording audio, and collaborating with professional journalists at one of Southern California's leading news organizations.

Sammy's interest in journalism began more than seven years ago when she designed pages for her middle school's yearbook. At LMU, she has continued to grow as a storyteller, serving as managing editor of The Loyolan student newspaper while developing the experience and professional network that led her to this opportunity.

Through faculty mentorship, dedicated internship programs, and strong connections across Los Angeles, LMU students can apply what they learn in the classroom through paid internships, gain meaningful professional experience before graduation, and build the knowledge, skills, and connections that prepare them for successful careers.

• Support Your Student’s Fall Course Registration Preparation: Encourage your student to complete important enrollment tasks, including questionnaires, placement exams, online tutorials, and virtual workshops.⁠

• Submit the Housing Deposit: Help your student submit their housing deposit by May 19 to receive priority housing consideration.⁠
