It turns out the Spirit is often at work long before we recognize it.

While facilitating workshops with the Brotherhood of St. Gregory, our KI team discovered that themes from their conversations were unexpectedly echoed in a sermon by Bishop Betsey Monnot on Mary Magdalene and power, faithfulness, and transformation.

A little Kaleidoscope Tea Time about Holy Currencies, the Cycle of Gospel Living, and what happens when seemingly separate conversations begin speaking to one another.

✨ What Holy Currencies do you notice flowing through this story?

What's the difference between a beauty you manufacture to end the waiting, and a beauty you contemplate in the waiting?

This week's reflection pairs the golden calf with Paul's invitation to dwell on whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, and lovely.

Maybe the hardest part isn't recognizing ugly idols.

Maybe it's recognizing beautiful ones.

I found a sign in the pottery studio Montreat last week:

"It's not pots we're making but ourselves."

That one sentence became the lens through which I read Philippians 3.

Maybe the clay isn't the thing on the wheel after all.

Maybe we are.

A reflection on Philippians 3:4b–14, becoming, and the grace of unfinished things.

Looking for a spark of inspiration this week?

This week, our Kaleidoscope Bible Sharing practice is sitting with Philippians 2: 1-13, one of the most beautiful passages in the New Testament.

Three readings.
Three questions.

One quiet moment of clarity.

If you’re writing a sermon, leading a group, or just trying to breathe, this week’s KBS might be a good place to begin.

This week, we welcome Leah to sit with us.

Where might God be present — not in the deception, but with those whose agency has been ignored?

Our Substack, The Grace Margin, is named for a foundational KI concept where meaningful change happens in the space between comfort and fear. Leah's story is uncomfortable, but grace gives us room to ask brave questions without rushing to tidy the narrative.

Today we celebrate the Rev. Dr. Marcia Patton’s 50th Ordination Anniversary — fifty years of faithful ministry, courageous leadership, and steadfast presence in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Marcia’s work has shaped congregations, nurtured leaders, and strengthened communities with a generosity of spirit that continues to ripple outward.

"Rev. Patton’s journey with Kaleidoscope Institute began during her leadership with the newly founded Evergreen Association of American Baptist Churches in 2003. As Evergreen organized by ethnic caucuses and practiced consensus, KI’s tools and frameworks offered invaluable guidance, helping to form communities rooted in shared leadership and sacred decision-making...." You can learn more about Rev. Patton and her work at the Kaleidoscope Institute in her interview, Sacred Decisions and the Spirit of Consensus.

We give thanks for her witness, her wisdom, and her decades of service to the Church and the world. May her next season be filled with joy, rest, and the same abundant grace she has poured into so many.

For those in the Washington State area, there is an in-person celebration. Learn more here:

Kaleidoscope Text Sharing this week asks: What is the Holy One calling you to do, be, or change? Whose cup of cold water are you being asked to carry — and from whom might you finally let yourself receive one?

Guest author Michael Morrell guides us through this week’s reflection.
