We find our world in a time of heightened struggles for justice, equity, and the preservation of life. In the United States, in particular, this time is marked by the essential presence of the Black Lives Matter movement and the battle to end the long campaign of extrajudicial murder and persecution that has claimed the lives of so many of our fellow citizens, from George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, back into the history of the various imperial colonial invasions that have structured human history in so many terrible ways. Black Lives Matter—and matter, furthermore, only in themselves but also in the inspiration and support they lend to the struggles of other marginalized and oppressed people around the world. We honor both the local context of our struggles for human flourishing and the global context of the worldwide fight to preserve human and non-human life in peace and dignity. The Program in LGBTQ Studies at UCLA comes from a tradition of thought and action that aspires to care for those on the margins, to defend those left unprotected from harm, to cherish those regarded as less-deserving or less-valuable. We stand with those who are seeking justice, and we aim to find more powerful ways to speak in support of the struggle. We are each other’s teachers to and we are grateful for the work in building our collective wisdom and strength.

Join QScholars of UCLA and Liyang Network USA on June 11 from 5:30-7:30pm PST for “Weaving Struggles from Within: US Empire and QTBIPOC Solidarity” a teach-in and facilitated conversation on the struggles of Lumad womxn and LGBTQIA+ people in the overall fight for land and self-determination. With this intention, we have organized a webinar featuring representatives from Liyang Network USA and Sabokahan. Learn about the contemporary and hxstorical work of Sabokahan in challenging patriarchal practices within Lumad communities as well as ensuring leadership of Lumad womxn and LGBTQ+ people in the overall struggle for land and self-determination. May we uplift our US-based advocacy and the central role of q***r & trans US-based advocates in this work. Following the teach-in, Sabokahan youth coordinator will give a message focusing on the intersections of her identity and her role within her community as a Manobo culture bearer and representative of her community internationally. Lastly, as QScholars of UCLA, Liyang Network USA, and Sabokahan we will curate a discussion on how we can be in solidarity with Black self-determination while drawing connections and contrasts between Black and Lumad liberation.

LIYANG NETWORK: URGENT CALL FOR EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUNDS!

Between October 16 and 31st, 6.3, 6.5, and 6.6-magnitude earthquakes struck Cotabato in Mindanao, Philippines. We must weave together our talents, skills, resources, and diverse experiences to provide earthquake relief to victims.

Mindanao has 1.3 trillion mineral resources. Mindanao’s abundance of silver, nickel, iron, gold, copper, chrome, limestone, and more constructs the island as the “Mining Capital of Asia.” Mining and dams produce the deadliest earthquakes and highest number of human-induced earthquakes worldwide.

Reservoir-induced seismicity (RIS) and the drilling of earth in Mindanao ignites tectonic strain, catalyzing earthquakes. Multinational extractive industries mine and build dams and railways in Mindanao, displacing and killing its local people.

In the barangay Makilala alone, the earthquakes destroyed all of the 357 households. Misfi Academy, a LUMAD school in North Cotabato already facing militarization and government attacks- tragically collapsed.

As of November 5, the earthquakes affected 231,200+ people, killed 21+ folx, injured 421+ people, caused 36,100+ to evacuate, and destroyed 22,279+ houses and 1,075+ schools.

The Philippine Department of Education declared it will take one year to rebuild public infrastructures.

Liyang Network urges us to build unity on the faultlines and frontlines.

Our Earth is screaming in tectonic combustions.

We must passionately support the self determination of Lumad land defenders protecting their ancestral lands through environmental justice.

Provide support and solidarity by donating earthquake relief funds to feed and provide medical support to Tulunan, Kidapwanan, Digos, Makilala, and Magsaysay in Cotabato, Mindanao.

Venmo or Paypal: paypal.me/sabokahan and add the note “Earthquake Relief.”

Be inspired to repost these posters and blast this information with your loved ones and communities.
