Five second-year JD students received the 2026 CEB Award for Excellence in Legal Research and Writing at the annual award ceremony recognizing excellent first-year brief writing on Aug. 31. Zaleya Galvan, Caitlin Kennedy, Paola Michelle Montpiedra, Esther Yun, and Ani Ayvazian were selected by alumni judges Karen Bohmholdt '04, Michelle Cornell-Davis, and Michael Driscoll, Jr. They each received a $600 prize from CEB. Thanks to CEB for supporting the students through this award and congratulations to the winners for their fantastic work!

The award ceremony also recognized 18 winners of LLS's First-Year Brief Award. These students were selected by the Legal Research and Writing faculty, who were impressed by their legal analysis, written clarity, and persuasiveness. Congratulations to all the winners!

At 12, Nick Cohen '25 started helping his parents market their law firm, teaching himself to code and exploring how attorneys could use the internet to reach potential clients. More than two decades later, Cohen has graduated from Loyola's Hybrid JD Evening Program and is now building a law firm with his father while continuing to help other attorneys grow theirs. “I saw how challenging law school was and how professors helped illuminate a path for me,” Cohen said. “I’d like to help Loyola Law students find a way to study or grow their network by being themselves as well.” https://bit.ly/4x3sawK

A range of orientation activities this week provided guidance for new and clinic students in the prelude to the start of the fall 2026 semester. “A law degree, and especially a Loyola education, is powerful – it gives you the power to change your own life and the lives of those around you. This is an extraordinary privilege – think carefully about how you will use it and what difference you will make,” said Dean Brietta Clark in her welcome address to new students.

New students attended a range of sessions on law school fundamentals, generative AI, and academic success interspersed with social hours. Meanwhile, clinic students went into the field, visiting the East L.A. Courthouse, as well as partner organizations like Dolores Mission Church and Homeboy Industries.

Reporters, editors, and producers from across the country descended on our campus earlier this month for the 20th-anniversary Journalist Law School (JLS). They received four days of intensive instruction from LLS faculty and guest speakers on core legal subjects seasoned with sessions on topics ripped from the headlines.

The American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) has been a proud sponsor of JLS from the very beginning.
