Did I ever tell you about the time I was lighting with Colin and Caleb when Haskell Wexler, yes Thee Haskell Wexler from ICG: International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600) comes strolling in. One of the realist original cool guy tinkerers of Hollywood that helped teach us all and shape the industry. Thank you Haskell P Wexler.

Did I ever tell you the story about the time I was in the condor working on the Little Richard story? It was day 1 and we were shooting into the night. I was in the condor providing a big moon light for the scene. I had been up there for a couple hours and needed to relieve myself but had no water bottles so I just peed over the side of the condor. We were at a film ranch in the hills so I figured no problem. What I didn't know was that a limousine had parked under my basket and an important person was standing out the sunroof having a look at the set from a distance. Well, the next thing I heard as I drained out was a high pitched "Hey, Heeyyyy" from under my condor basket. I looked over the side and there was this limo with main dude screaming at me from out of the sunroof. "Heeyyyy. Heeyyy" The driver immediately moved the car forward about 20 feet.

Did I ever tell you the story of the time I went to Buddy Hackett's house to light an interview. He was real cool to me. After I showed an interest in his art, Buddy told me to peruse his house and report back which art I liked best. During the perusal, I encountered his lovely wife. Then I reported back to Buddy. Turns out I liked his 2 favorite paintings. One was a painting by Nancy Sinatra and the other I can't remember, but it was a known name like Basquiat or something on that level. We ended up having a couple shots of vodka in his office at 9:30am while Buddy told me great stories and I admired his Re*****on art, photos and western collection. When the interview was done and we were leaving, the Hackett's, in a very kind gesture, gave me a gift bag as it was near Christmas. The bag included an old signed 8x10 photo of Buddy with Sam Snead among other items. (We had talked about Lakeside Country Club Toluca Lake, California in his office) I dropped Buddy off at the Friars Club in Beverly Hills, California for a roast and continued to the beach to catch some waves.

Lighting Pete was reading in Food & Wine magazine about how owner of Eleven Madison Park Will Guidara hosts like a pro and found that he was right in many ways.
The key to being a good host/hostess is keeping things simple and fun. The reason you all gathered is to share each others company, not to try to out do each other with ridiculous challenges. These are the nights to try a new item and enjoy old favorites.
One of the cool hosting things I liked to do was bring unique folks together for a fun night while having enough easy foods and drinks for everyone without making a fuss out of it. Too many rules limits the fun.
I liked the point Will makes about being 'present' at your party. Too many people today are not present in their own chaotic lives. Put the phone down. Stop trying to keep up with everything all the time.
Relax and live. Let your life be full by simply living and enjoying what you have.
Cheers
