Hats off to Yale Law School for taking a stand in deciding not to participate in the USNWR rankings. As the highest ranked ( always #1) law school, Dean Heather Gerken has decided that YLS will no longer participate. Please read the detailed and thoughtful rationale for this decision especially as it relates to financial aid, low income students and students ( many BiPoc ones who have always pursued law school and public service careers, but post George Floyd have been increasing in numbers). When the #1 ranked law school in the country makes a decision like this as the ‘right thing to do’, will the rankings system listen? Will other law schools follow? Many students ( and parents) blindly follow ( against our professional advice) rankings as the ‘holy grail’ to determine and encourage students attendance without considering the elements that go into these rankings. Let’s continue to educate and debunk the myth that ‘rankings’ equate to high quality education and help our families ( and especially first-generation and low income) make good decisions. How can we come together to promote this?

A colleague/friend who is the Director of Diversity and Inclusion Programs for the Becker Friedman Institute has asked me to spread the word about this summer program. It's for rising sophomore and junior college students to introduce them to economics. It's virtual this year and students receive a stipend to attend-with a higher stipend for Pell Grant recipients. Looks like a great program for students who took coursework in high school or college in calculus, statistics, economics or other quantitative fields. There's also the opportunity to appy for a research assistant program during the academic year with compensation attached. Application deadline is March 14, 2021. Please pass the word along.
