Did you know Salazar Park in East L.A. is named after L.A. Times journalist Rubén Salazar, who was killed while covering the 1970 Chicano Moratorium?

On August 29, 1970, thousands marched through East L.A. to protest the Vietnam War and its disproportionate impact on Latino communities. The peaceful march was met with police violence, leaving three people dead—including Salazar, who was fatally struck by a tear-gas projectile inside a nearby café.

Laguna Park was later renamed Salazar Park in his honor. Today, it remains a place of community, remembrance, and the ongoing fight for justice.

ABC was proud to co-host this important conversation alongside CIPC, CARECEN, CHIRLA, ORALE, and SALVA, bringing together community members and leaders to help shape a unified set of recommendations for the incoming governor.

Community leaders shared their experiences and made clear that the needs and voices of Latina/o and immigrant communities must be centered in shaping an immigrant-focused policy agenda—including immigrant rights, protections, and pathways toward long-term stability.

We’re grateful to everyone who showed up and helped ensure our communities were represented in this important conversation. 💛✊🏽

It’s National Women’s Equality Day – did you know that Latinas still experience a significant wage gap in many fields? Latinas contribute so much to our communities and they deserve equitable compensation for their valuable work!

Veronica Terriquez is Director of the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, Co-Founder of the Latina Futures 2050 Lab, and a professor at UCLA. Her innovative research and civic engagement work is a beacon for emerging leaders in our communities, and she knows that a world where Latinas are paid their worth is entirely possible.

We’ve seen it again and again – unlawful, warrantless immigration arrests are happening and it has to stop.

Last week, we showed up outside the federal courthouse to support our immigrant community and the organizations fighting on their behalf, including CHIRLA, UFW, NDLON, and ACLU SoCal. These advocates are speaking up as part of the Vasquez Perdomo v. Mullin case that is challenging the unconstitutional and racist arrests of our community members.

Today is the anniversary of the flag of the City of Los Angeles. 🎉 🏙️

Known as the “Fiesta Flag,” the official city flag was adopted on July 22, 1931, paying homage to the region’s agriculture and history.

We visited El Pueblo de Los Angeles to learn more about the symbolism behind the flag and how it tells the story of the many people and nations that were a part of the founding and continuing evolution of the city we know and love today.

The Supreme Court has upheld the longstanding interpretation of birthright citizenship, reaffirming that all persons born or naturalized in the U.S. are citizens, even those born to parents without legal status.

This decision is a major win for immigrant families everywhere. Birthright citizenship continues to open doors for children of immigrants, allowing them to grow, lead, and shape the future of this country.
