Explore the role of religion in shaping Japanese history, culture, and identity through our upcoming Japanese Religions online seminar. ⛩️📚
Led by Lori Meeks, Associate Professor of Religion and East Asian Languages and Cultures at USC, this five-week series will examine topics including Shinto, Buddhist transmission, monastic culture, Pure Land, Zen, and women in Buddhism.
Designed for K–12 educators, the seminar offers an opportunity to deepen your understanding of Japan’s religious traditions and bring new historical and cultural perspectives into the classroom.

Join us for an afternoon of learning, conversation, and inspiration as we explore how contemporary ceramics and tea culture can open meaningful connections to Japanese history, culture, sustainability, and identity.
Educators will have the opportunity to engage with the exhibitions, hear from curator Kaoru Kuribayashi, connect with fellow teachers, and discover resources that can support classroom teaching across disciplines.

Join us for Teaching Japan Through Art: Contemporary Ceramics, Tea Culture, and Classroom Connections!
Explore how contemporary art and traditional cultural practices can open new ways of teaching Japanese history, culture, and society. Through Tea Ceremony with Pacific Plastics and Kinetic Stillness, participants will examine themes of craftsmanship, cultural identity, sustainability, innovation, and Japan’s evolving artistic traditions.
The workshop will feature guided exhibition introductions, a special presentation by Kaoru Kuribayashi, curator of Kinetic Stillness, and resources from The Japan Foundation for schools and Japanese language programs.
Open to K–12 educators across disciplines. Come explore the galleries, connect with fellow educators, and discover new classroom connections through art.

❤️ Three days of learning, culture, and connection! Educators came together to exchange ideas, explore creative teaching approaches, and celebrate Chinese language education.

📚 Day 1 | Cultural Workshops
Crystal Hsia from the USC U.S.-China Institute shared inclusive teaching strategies to help every student participate meaningfully. Participants also explored stamping art, calligraphy, Chinese painting, and martial arts. 🎨🖌️

🎤 Day 2 | Language & Celebration
UCLA Professor Hongyin Tao delivered a keynote on semantics and pragmatics in Chinese language education. The evening concluded with SCCCS’s 50th Anniversary Golden Gala. 🎉🏮

🌱 Day 3 | Looking Ahead
The final day focused on the future of community-based Chinese schools in Southern California, with discussions on challenges, opportunities, and long-term strategies. 💡🤝

✨ Thank you to everyone who joined us Los Angeles County Museum of Art for our professional development workshop, Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity!

Educators and community members explored how fashion and material culture can deepen understanding of Chinese history, identity, and social change. Through a guided docent tour and collaborative discussion, participants discovered new ways to bring East Asia into the classroom using art and museum resources.
