Book talk with author Jennifer Yip -

"Grains of Conflict:
The Struggle for Food in China's Total War, 1938-1945"

Historian Jennifer Yip (葉郁琳) of the National University of Singapore will offer a talk on her latest book, Grains of Conflict, just published by Cambridge University Press.
Professor Yip is a historian of war, strategy, and the socio-economic effects of war mobilization, with a focus on Republican China. She holds a both Ph.D. and a Master’s from the University of Pennsylvania as well as a Master of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge.
Her lecture will be held in the newest building on campus, Levy Hall, located at 930 West Johnson, which is now the home of the Department of History.

🍱 Exploring Japan through food!
On September 12, K–12 educators joined the USC U.S.-China Institute at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles for Teaching Japan Through Foodways: WASHOKU, Nature & Cultural Identity.

🌱 Through a docent-led tour of the WASHOKU exhibition, teachers explored how Japanese food traditions connect to seasonality, agriculture, sustainability, and craftsmanship. Participants also had time to revisit displays and consider how food reflects the relationships among people, nature, and cultural identity.

📚 The learning continued through collaborative discussions and classroom planning. From exploring how geography shapes what we eat to considering hands-on activities like miso-making, teachers exchanged ideas for connecting students’ everyday experiences with a deeper understanding of Japanese culture.

Join us for East Asia Since 1800, an online seminar for K–12 educators exploring the modern histories of China, Japan, Korea, and the broader East Asian region.
Throughout the series, educators will engage with visual and material primary sources, deepen their understanding of modern East Asia, and gain practical strategies and classroom-ready resources to bring back to their students.
